About John Frauens

A retired orthopaedic surgeon in Honolulu, Hawaii, John Frauens currently devotes his time to the operation of SoftJoint, Inc., a company that has developed a synthetic cartilage for human implantation. John Frauens also serves as an orthopaedic consultant for the Corrections Division of the Hawaii Department of Public Safety, overseeing care for incarcerated individuals throughout the state.

Prior to his retirement, Dr. John Frauens spent 25 years as director of the Total Joint Service division at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program, where he was responsible for performing bone tumor, knee replacement, and artificial hip surgeries. Additionally, he developed the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Kaiser Moanalua Medical Center and co-developed the Kaiser Hawaii Osteoporosis Program.

A graduate of Temple University, Dr. Frauens holds a bachelor of science in physical therapy, and he earned his medical degree at the same university. In addition to his professional responsibilities, he serves on the board of directors of Common Grace, a charitable organization that pairs neighborhood churches with public schools to mentor at-risk youth.
