About John August Kaiser

John August is the former executive director for the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions. He has more than 30 years’ experience organizing workers and a passion for representing their interests and fighting for social justice. Whether bus drivers, mechanics, educators, or hospital workers, John August has consistently stood up for workers' rights.

Mr. August has solid relations with employers as well, including Kaiser Permanente executives and the health care industry more broadly. During his time with the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions, based in Oakland, California, he helped lead one of the most successful and complex partnerships between workers and management in U.S. history. On behalf of 100,000 union members, John August was able to lead three successful bargaining efforts and develop unit-based teams for over 120,000 physicians and health care employees.

John August studied political science at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, earning a B.A. Prior to his engagement as a Kaiser Permanente union organizer, he was employed by Service Employees International Union as a deputy director. In this position, he led collective bargaining efforts and organized workers, successfully establishing and growing a union within a large national hospital chain. Mr. August has also serves as an associate director with Cornell University, providing consultations and education for unions and management in the health care sector.
