Skills

Skills

Lesson Planning

Breaking down the curriculum into manageable lessons to enable unique learning experiences.

Tutoring

I tutor Post level One teachers and I also tutor school children. It is always an opportunity to expand someone's horizon. It is a challenge at times but always a mutual and rewarding experience.

Coaching

My coaching skills include sports as well as skills needed in life for the teaching profession. I love the thrill of seeing an undiscovered talent blossoming before my eyes. It gives that person a much needed boost that motivates them to do better.

Literacy

My main concern is that our children seldom learn to read with comprehension. If I could change this aspect of teaching, I think our dismal academic results in this country will improve.

Classroom Management

Managing the resources, both human and material in a classroom so that the best result is possible in learning and teaching.

Classroom

I love to create a conducive environment for learning first by looking at the needs of the learners whom I teach. I try to make the classroom a comfortable space for children to learn.

Educational Leadership

This means I do not lose sight of the big picture in education. It does sometimes mean I question the status quo to see if we are moving in the right direction and whether we are being effective and efficient in delivering the curriculum. I also believe that we need people to accomplish tasks. Without our support as leaders, we will not be able to achieve meaningful results in education.

Teacher Training

I had a spell of five years at the Johannesburg College of Education and I know what is required of new teachers to the profession. I was instrumental in a pilot project of Recognising Prior learning for mature adults wanting to come into the teaching profession.

Public Speaking

Being a teacher, lecturer and facilitator I have had many opportunities to address smaller to larger crowds at any given time. Often times, very little notice is given to prepare something to deliver to an audience.

Curriculum Design

I designed the first year Higher Diploma curriculum in Education. I had to choose what was worthwhile learning and this was subject to moderation internally and externally, especially the exams. This was moderated by the University of the Western Cape. In teaching I analyse and implement the curriculum that is given to us as a guide. We need to come up with extra work to hone the skills of our young minds.

Educational Technology

I am currently the Head of ICT at my school. I will be responsible for the cultivating of Technological skills for the Intersen phase of the school. I will teach skills in MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Publisher. I will also teach children to research using the internet as a tool.

E-Learning

I want to use Microsoft's PIL programme in the new year. I want children to know how to use these resources to upgrade their skills. We also have a set of 42 tablets that will be used in the classroom situation. Still looking at the best way to use these tablets.

Staff Development

This is a key area in my portfolio of Head of Department in English and Maths. I need to develop and support teachers who experience difficulties in any area of their curriculum delivery.

Curriculum Development

This is a more reflective role as we try to change what did not work in our service delivery and will try something new in its place. This is a team effort where each teacher gives feedback about their successes and challenges and we go about changing the curriculum accordingly. While the content may not change, the delivery of it certainly does.

English

As Head of Department in English, I have a passion for the language and want to ensure that each child can perform to the best of his or her ability. Passion for something always rubs off on someone and can bring about the desired change we seek.

Teaching

This is my calling and I teach no matter where I find myself, whether at work, at home or out in the world. My desire is to see each person developing their lives into something beautiful.
