Reporting directly to the Provost and serving on the President's team,  I am currently in my eleventh year as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and tenured Professor of Foreign Languages at Jacksonville State University, a public regional comprehensive university that strongly supports learning, research and service for a diverse student body of nearly 10,000  (including over 1,500 graduate students) and a faculty and staff of over 1,000.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

In twenty years of full-time college administration (from private, liberal arts to public, research-oriented, flagship universities) with increasing responsibility, I have displayed an unequivocal commitment to excellence in student learning, knowledge formation, professional preparation and civic engagement, including the following accomplishments:

  • Played a key role in growing, sustaining and overseeing formal frameworks in which scholarly, creative and professional programs developed and thrived in line with societal and global demands and educational innovations, including campus internationalization
  • Led Offices of Academic Affairs, Enrollment Management/ Student Affairs (cabinet position reporting directly to the university president with over 85 reports in 17 areas of support) and Graduate Studies 
  • Led shaping of university's mission; helped generate and employ budget-linked strategic plan; and headed initiatives to ensure continuous improvement of institutional effectiveness, improve student retention to graduation and provide meaningful outreach for life-long learning in the broader community
  • Managed extensive portfolio including admissions, advisement, campus safety, career services, counseling and testing services, disability support, financial aid, first-year programs and orientation, health services, judicial affairs, recreational sports, registration and records, residential life services, student life programs and supplemental academic support services
  • Worked with K-12, two-year and four-year higher education partners statewide to encourage collaboration and coordination of planning, efforts and resources and promote stronger, more confident investment in education
  • Managed annual portfolio budget exceeding $10 million, generated revenue policy for university budget of over $100 million and determined space and resource allocation in a complex, multi-campus institutional setting
  • Served as representative and liaison to Boards of Trustees
  • Enjoyed extensive development experience: successful grants training, grant writing and co-chairing of faculty capital giving drive (175% increase in sponsored grants funded over five years; $25 million capital campaign)
  • Provided campus-wide coordination, planning and policy oversight through leadership in academic council, administrative council, committee to support success of athletes, deans’ council, graduate council, president’s cabinet, strategic planning committee and visioning subcommittee
  • Coordinated hiring supervision of faculty, staff and administrators with a commitment to confidentiality, consultation, diversity, shared governance and transparency
  • Taught at the university level for over twenty years
  • Maintained an active research agenda in Caribbean studies, faculty dynamics, Holocaust studies, indigenous studies, Irish studies, post-colonial studies, Renaissance studies and research integrity/ ethics

Supervised and coordinated all aspects of graduate education within the university and worked with all graduate programs to implement policies that support the recruitment and academic achievement of graduate students

Led Graduate Council and its committees on policies, procedures and curriculum toward continuing improvement and innovation of graduate programs

Worked with state and national committees and associations involved with graduate studies

Exercised final authority to approve all theses and dissertations submitted for graduate degrees

Coordinated a network of departmental/program Graduate Program Directors to advise the Dean's Office on graduate affairs

Coordinated the university’s participation in program review of academic programs with graduate program components

Worked to create, foster, enrich and increase opportunities for graduate research on campus

Led committees that created and directed highly recognized Common Intellectual Experiences, Freshman Year Experiences, Honors Colleges and Programs, Laptop Campus Initiatives and Residential Colleges   Attained a federal-wide assurance (FWA) for the university, facilitating multi-million-dollar federal grants and contributing to a 175% growth in grants funded over five years ($9.75 million to $17 million)   Provided executive oversight and leadership for urban campuses shared with a two-year higher education partner with articulated programs leading to seamless two-year to four-year program transitions   Formed consensus among multiple program constituencies and identified resources to realize the creation of a Humanities and World Cultures Institute and expansion of an Academic Center for Excellence   Helped create and chaired Committee to Ensure Support for Success of Athletes: NCAA sports teams improved from Probationary Status to Most Improved Institution in the conference in just two years   Served as Campus Response Team member (one of three) for institutional accreditation review process and for the mid-term report, resulting in a full ten-year reaffirmation of regional accreditation
