Janine’s practice focuses on strategic commercial transactions involving technology and intellectual property. Such transactions include licensing and acquisition of technology; issues surrounding the protection and exploitation of Internet-based assets and cloud computing; privacy and information security; and technology export compliance.  Janine counsels clients on general technology and intellectual property matters, negotiates and drafts a wide range of technology agreements, and handles technology disputes. She also serves as technology counsel on M&A transactions and has significant general contracting experience.

Janine’s practice focuses on strategic commercial transactions involving technology and intellectual property. Such transactions include licensing and acquisition of technology; issues surrounding the protection and exploitation of Internet-based assets and cloud computing; privacy and information security; and technology export compliance.  Janine counsels clients on general technology and intellectual property matters, negotiates and drafts a wide range of technology agreements, and handles technology disputes. She also serves as technology counsel on M&A transactions and has significant general contracting experience.

Additionally, Janine advises companies contracting with governments on intellectual property and technical data rights issues. This work includes handling complex licensing arrangements between prime and sub-contractors and interpretation of FAR and DFARS to assist clients in maximizing intellectual property and technology ownership and license rights in government contracts.

Janine also advises companies on implementing sweepstakes, games and contests (both offline and online) nationwide, including rules drafting to ensure state-level and nationwide legal compliance.

Ms. Bowen is a Certified Information and Privacy Professional (CIPP). This credential certifies her skill in a broad range of corporate privacy issues including laws and concepts in the U.S., E.U. and the Asia Pacific region, and includes workplace privacy, information security, web privacy, security, and data sharing and transfer.

Red Hot Law Group acted as general counsel to technology companies. The firm was acquired by a predecessor to McKenna Long & Aldridge in 2001.

Transactional practice specializing in technology commercialization, licensing, general corporate matters, and early stage company counseling. 

1995 - 1999

Program Manager

IBM
  • Program Manager, SanFrancisco Technology Licensing: Led worldwide efforts to license IBM technology to solution developers. Managed relationships with legal, marketing, development, and pricing organizations. Over 800 active agreements in portfolio.
  • Contract Relations Analyst/Business Manager: Negotiated, drafted, and managed international software licensing agreements with independent software vendors. Worldwide revenues from active contracts in the department portfolio exceeded $150 million.
  • Project Manager: Managed a $4.5 million worldwide software development project with a core team of 12 and extended team of 30 people. Successfully delivered two software releases in 1996.
1993 - 1994

Industrial Engineer

CIBA Vision

Provided industrial and quality engineering expertise in an R&D engineering group of 20 people.

  • Led an engineering team which evaluated the feasibility of manufacturing a new lens product. Management review of the engineering evaluation resulted in a decision not to launch the product, saving the company $5 million per year.
  • Co-led a manufacturing quality control implementation effort resulting in statistical training for 25 managers and 10 technicians and implementation of control charting in molding area.
  • Developed curriculum and organized statistical software training for 48 research scientists and engineers.
1991 - 1993

Senior Consultant

Accenture (f/k/a Andersen Consulting)

Designed, developed, and installed custom business software for consumer products clients.

  • Supervised a team of four people who developed a reporting system utilizing client server technology and GUI programming tools for mail-order marketing campaigns for a $5 billion client company.
  • Developed reporting software for a project management system using COBOL in a DEC/VAX environment for a $200 million client company.
