I wanted to share some of my initial blog postings from my online Social Media course I am currently taking through Durham College, Oshawa. This blog was was posted to discuss whether or not social media is just a fad or not. This helps to show my writing skills, and how I can be involved in discussions involving my own opinion.    Personally, I believe that social media affects nearly everyone in society in today's world. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and MySpace are just some examples of social media out there. Social media is continuously growing and evolving, as a way of communication between people. I find myself constantly checking Facebook, using Blackberry messenger, texting, and from time to time watching YouTube videos. If you turn on the radio, or watch TV there are always ads saying 'Like this on Facebook' or 'Scan the Barcode for more information' on products. This goes to show how big social media has become in today's world. Companies are using social media as a way to promote their product, and get people to hear about it. Ten years ago, you wouldn't have seen a celebrity posting about what they did with their day online; but today they are always tweeting about something that happened, or something that they saw, or whatever it may be. Providers are continuously trying to upgrade, adding new features and make things more visually appealing to their audience, so they stay interested and want to keep up to date things. I wouldn’t say that social media is a good thing, or a bad thing. Since most people use at least one source of social media, I would say it can be useful, but is not necessary. Over 700,000 people join Facebook a day. This says to me, that social media is far more than just a fad. It has largely become part of people’s lives, and isn't going to stop anytime soon. People are always interested in what may come next, and as long as we stay interested, social media will continue to expand.
