Technology Specialist

Walters Controls, Inc.

While working as a project manager at Walters Controls, I continued to expand my role as a project manager, continuously working to improve the tools available to other project managers in the company via application development and process streamlining.  The role of Technology Specialist was jointly created by Skipper Walters, the owner of Walters Controls, management, and myself on paper in mid-2011, with the position formally filled in Jan. 2012

Part of the shared vision of the "Technology Specialist" position focuses on how we, as a small controls contractor could navigate the future of the controls industry while having a clear handle on the internal technology and software that we use to conduct and grow our business.  It was clear that as we grew, we would need software solutions to empower the project managers to meet and exceed project goals.  

Working up to the creation of the Technology Specialist position, I have developed and implemented working solutions, with a few applications in the design phase.  Some of these include: 

  • Network Related
    • Overhauled network infrastructure to ensure up-time
    • Assumed point-of-contact role for all network/internet related issues
    • Email server administration and maintenance
  • Asset Management 
    • Created application to manage internal computer hardware inventory and peripherals.
    • Assist in hardware maintenance, repairs, online part ordering for internal assets
    • Responsible for seamless hardware/software upgrade of outdated on-site server
    • Developed Hardware Loan-out application- Working with multiple contractors and multiple controls product lines typically can require technical assistance and specialized hardware to aid other subcontractors in the completion of the project.  An application was developed to streamline these interactions and track computer hardware and software as we partner with these contractors.
  • Backup and Disaster Recovery
    • Created, implemented, and currently maintain backup strategy for all company owned data relying on continuous on-site and off-site concurrent backup.
  • Customer Relations/Marketing
    • Created and currently maintain company website, updated domain registration information, and all hosting contracts
    • Monitor and ensure high page-rank on search engine for business exposure
    • Developed easy to use tools for transferring large files our partners 
    • Create and maintain unified marketing materials (e.g. logos, print advertising, business correspondence
  • Employee Empowerment and Support
    • Developed and maintain an internal knowledge-sharing forum
    • Developed a "Technician Portal", allowing technicians in the field to access technical literature on our products via mobile interface
    • Train all employees on all HVAC controls software packages used by Walters Controls
  • Other Software Developed
    • Application to streamline graphics creation for the Honeywell Symmetre software.
    • Application to generate, assign, and monitor progress on assigned work order and service requests.
    • Application to track job materials from delivery at WCI warehouse to jobsite
    • Application to track company software resources
    • Application to enable the project manager to fully manage the total project, from engineering, to submittal phases, to controls installation, and finally checkout and commissioning

Project Manager - HVAC Controls

Walters Controls, Inc.

As a Project Manager for Walters Controls my primary focus was delivering a high-quality job to a satisfied building owner while meeting or exceeding profit goals.   With significant knowledge of commercial construction, mechanical systems, HVAC, electrical, and air movement methods I have successfully completed more than 20 projects ranging in size from light commercial simple electric to fully commissioned and integrated LEED certified.  

  • Duties performed as Project Manager:
    • Assist in estimating job hardware costs/overall technical strategy to meet specifications
    • Successfully receive hand-off from sales, ensuring complete understanding of product sold
    • Project engineering and AutoCAD drawings 
    • Project software design and programming
    • Coordinate logistics of job material completely from supplier warehouse to job-site
    • Monitor job progress by establishing relationship with GC and MEP superintendents
    • Coordinate with subcontracted electricians, ensure understanding of total project
    • Establish relationship with owner, search for new ways to tie in service, ensure satisfaction with final overall product
    • Handle warranty item replacements
  • Project Technician:
    • Ensure subcontractor installation is correct technically and professionally done
    • Load software into all devices
    • Ensure network between devices completely functional 
    • Commission each device to ensure proper programming and functional hardware
    • Tuning software to match installed equipment
    • Have working relationship with technical support contacts at hardware vendors (Honeywell TAC, etc)
    • Troubleshoot devices
  • Project Misc:
    • Importing of project into owner's front-end PC.
    • Design graphical interface for interacting with controls installation
    • Track and record labor hours weekly
  • Service:
    • Respond to service requests in a timely manner, ensuring complete corrective action to customer's satisfaction

While at Integrity Media my duties included:

With a diverse background that includes experience in e-commerce, information technology, programming, and HVAC controls project management, I am seeking to build a partnership with a forward-thinking controls company that is ready to grow their business.    


I am currently serving on a team of superior controls integrators as our Technology Specialist.  We are a Honeywell Elite Authorized Controls Integrator, 1 of only 10 receiving this honor in the United States.   As we grew, and to adapt to the changing and uncertain economic climate, it was obvious that we needed to streamline our operations and focus on empowering our team members with a coordinated approach.  

Currently, in my capacity as Technology Specialist,  my main responsibility is developing and implementing our overarching internal technology strategy while maintaining a light project management load.   The goal of this new direction and creation of our framework is to enable senior project managers to have a complete perspective of the project from all angles allowing them to continue to bring in excellent jobs.  Another benefit of the new framework and structure will be that new hires and junior project managers will significantly need less time "training up" to the senior project management levels, which can typically take up to 3 years in our industry.   This is a nice challenge, and I am excited to see the new levels of success that we will enjoy over the coming years.
