SH1 Mackays to Peka Peka Expressway Detailed Design Stage, New Zealand Transport Agency, New Zealand 2013–to date (Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner Ltd)

I have been involved with the detailed design stage for the Expressway working for the M2PP Alliance. There are 18 major bridges and a number of culverts, retaining walls and noise walls. The bridges are valued at over $100M out of this $600M project and are currently under construction.

At the detailed design stage, I have been involved with detailed design of Paetawa Drain Bridge and Nga Manu Road Overpass. I have also been involved with the design of culverts, noise walls, and other miscellaneous civil structures.  I also coordinated the design with other multiple discipline elements (geotechnical design, civil design, stormwater design, utilities and pavement design, urban design, and landscape architecture) and with the construction team as well.

Peer Review and Verification of Designs for Earthquake Damaged Bridges, SCIRT Alliance Christchurch, New Zealand, 2012-to date (Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner Ltd)

I have been involved with peer review and verification of various bridge repair and remedial projects for earthquake damaged bridges in Christchurch for the SCIRT alliance. These include replacement of abutments and repairs to structural members.

Waimakariri Bridge R501 – Earthquake Repairs, Old Waimakariri Bridge, Christchurch, Christchurch City Council, New Zealand, 2011–to date (Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner Ltd)   

I have carried out the detailed design of permanent strengthening works to pier 29 and the south abutment for the Old Waimakariri Bridge. The design had to account for liquefaction in proximity to the river and the compatibility of strengthening design with the existing structure. Contract value $800K.

Replacement of Airlie Road Bridge, Porirua City Council, Porirua, Wellington, New Zealand, June 2010 – October 2012 (Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner Ltd)

Porirua City Council engaged Beca for professional engineering services for the replacement of an old single lane timber bridge over the NIMT railway. The new bridge comprises a single 18m span DHC structure supported on concrete abutments and bored piles. It is recently constructed. The construction cost is about $1.5M.

I have worked as a Job Manager during the detailed design phase, and the structural designer responsible to deliver the detailed design package.

SH1 Ngauranga to Aotea Quay ATM, Wellington, New Zealand Transport Agency, New Zealand, 2010– to date (Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner Ltd)

I have been involved in the scheme assessment stage of the project to increase the capacity of the motorway between Ngauranga Gorge and the Aotea Quay Off-ramp in Wellington through either hard shoulder running or permanent four lane running using ATM systems to control traffic flows. The scheme will require the existing Thorndon Overbridge to be widened or a separate structure provided alongside to increase the number of traffic lanes. The project is being delivered through an ECI contact with Fletcher Construction as the contractor and Beca as the lead designer. Project cost is $60M.

SH2A Hairini Bridge Seismic Assessment and Retrofit, New Zealand Transport Agency, New Zealand, 2010–2011 (Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner Ltd)

The scope of work involved the development of the structural concept, detailed design and compilation of the contract documentation. The assessment used displacement based methods. I have carried out the detailed design of the final concept which comprised of installing new linkage bolts between the abutment and deck. Estimate of works for tender $300k.

Walmsley Bottleneck Upgrade, New Zealand Transport Agency, Auckland, New Zealand, 2010 (Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner Ltd)

Beca is responsible for retrofitting a number of highway structures, including pedestrian bridge, single-span integral bridge, gantries, retaining walls, etc. to accommodate widened motorway.

I have carried out the detailed design of Hall Avenue Footbridge and Ramps.

Structural Verifier and Overview, SH73 Christchurch Southern Motorway D&C for Fulton Hogan Ltd, New Zealand, $100M, 2009-Present (Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner Ltd)

Beca is the structural verifier for the structures which include 2 grade-separated interchanges, 2 three span underpasses, 2 overbridges and numerous culverts and subway structures. Overall project cost $100M.

I have carried out the verification of the Annex Subway Extension.

I have carried out research for a study of international load rating practices for steel viaducts and trusses for KiwiRail to compare their current rating standards with overseas practice in Australia, North America, UK and Europe. The study provided recommendations on the standards that should be adopted with respect to structural safety.

Options Study for Replacement of Bridge No 3 in Christchurch, KiwiRail, New Zealand, 2011 (Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner Ltd)

I have worked as the job manager for study of options to replace Bridge No 3 on the MSL south of Christchurch which has been severely damaged by the February 2011 earthquake. The single span steel girder bridge with brick abutments is to be replaced by a concrete ballast trough deck supported on piled abutments, and has a replacement cost of $3M.

I have worked as job manager for study to replace the roller bearings on this multi-span steel truss girder rail bridge with new laminated rubber bearings. The expected cost is $400k.

Replacement of Bridges 56 and 61 on the Wairarapa Line, KiwiRail, New Zealand, 2010 (Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner Ltd)

Beca undertook the concept and detailed design, prepared contract documents and supervised construction.

I have carried out the detailed design for the replacement of two steel and timber rail bridges on the Wairarapa Line north of Wellington, to be replaced by standard concrete box culverts.

I have been responsible for developing a suite of fully detailed standard precast culvert designs for use below the railway covering rectangular culverts that vary in size between 3m x 3m and 1m x 1m, to be used by KiwiRail for drainage, farm accesses and pedestrian underpasses.

Bridge 298 Replacement, KiwiRail, New Zealand, 2010 (Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner Ltd)

Beca carried out concept and detailed design of the replacement bridge that carries the NIMT railway across a tributary to the Waikato River, north of Hamilton. The 140m long, 7 span bridge has liquefaction and scour issues as well as being threaded below the existing SH bridge. The project estimate is $10M.

I have been involved with the detailed design of the bridge’s substructure.

SH2 Matahorua Gorge Realignment, Napier, New Zealand Transport Agency, New Zealand, 2008-2009 (Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner Ltd)

I have been involved on the specimen design of a major bridge over Matahorua Gorge and a Rail Overbridge over the Napier-Gisborne Railway. Estimated total cost of structures is $11M. Gorge crossing is a 3-span bridge, 150m long with 50m high piers.

I have been responsible for the detailed engineering design of Bridge 55 North Auckland Line (NAL) and drawing management of various NAL bridges.

Interstate 10 Bridges over Escambia Bay Project, Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade and Douglas, Florida, 2005 (Parsons Brinckerhoff Philippines, Inc)  

A $243-million design-build contract awarded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to Tidewater Skanska and Flatiron Constructors (TSI/FCI) in partnership with Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade and Douglas, Inc. to rebuild the bridges that connect Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.  Both the existing westbound and eastbound bridges were significantly damaged by Hurricane Ivan in September 2004.  Construction will take place parallel to and south of the existing bridges.  The 4.2km long bridge comprises mainly of standard AASHTO Type II Precast Prestressed I-girder and standard Florida Bulb T 78 Precast Prestressed girder.

PB Philippines were tasked to assist PBQD in preparing the tabulations of the Bridge Deck Finish Grade Elevations, Prestressed Beam Build-up and Deflection Data, Table of Prestressed Beam Variables, Pier Elevations, Bridge Deck and Diaphragm Beam Reinforcement Details and Rebar Lists.

I have carried out the preparation of bridge deck and diaphragm beam reinforcement details and rebar list.

Engineering Services for Five Bridges along the Carranglan-Pelaway Access Road, Casecnan Hydropower Plant, Nueva Viscaya, Philippines, 2005 (Parsons Brinckerhoff Philippines, Inc)   

I have been involved in the analysis and design of bridge structural components for various bridge types and preparation of structural details and drawings to coordinate with Structural Draftsmen for proper completion and final submittal.

The LCT project is a major road project of the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) of the New South Wales government, consisting of a 3.5km dual tunnel between Epping Road/M2 Motorway at Lane Cove River to the Gore Hill Freeway.
