FAR is a not-for-profit Federal Government approved Research Foundation and Research Agency founded by Prof. B. S. Thornton (UTS) in 1974 to assist research and develop new technologies for resources, environmental problems and human resources.Examples of projects completed in collaboration with FAR, UTS and Breast Screening NSW: MAMMO ASSISTComprised of a System Design and a development of a pilot application for “A Java Based Computer Aided Training Package for Radiologists in the Diagnosis of Early Breast Cancer”.• Skills involved: distributed system design, implementation and testing, Java, JDBC, RMI, Java Servlets, GUI design, RMDBS database, digital image access, manipulation and comparative presentations, internet facility design for commercial remote usage, interaction with R&D and IT specialists and users of mammography systems.• Future usage: recommended for development with existing (not computerised) training system by Head of Breast Screening Sydney, Central & Eastern. Also it can be incorporated with the new advanced clinical system developed ($1.6M) by Foundation for Australian Resources for extending its compatibilities on a revenue producing basis where a computerised system for each user promises revenue stream in NSW, WA and QLD.• Commercialisation: to enable non-central radiologist organisation (must have necessary diagnostic knowledge) to either pay for a download of the software or they can transmit the cases to be evaluated in the central screening organisation with results sent back via internet on a professional charge basis.• Outcomes: project completed and demonstrated successfully Feb. 2002 awarded High Distinction. (copy of Project Report available on request)• Extensions: possibility to enhance the capabilities of the current training package to encounter for 'masses' seen in mammogram, in radiology training and updating and to enable the system to handle Video-Media streams over the IP such as Echo-cardiogram, in cardiology.Presently, my invited participation is in using a retrospective simulation of the IT, human resource ratio, automation and market targeting of products by a large Australian manufacturer. The company was taken over during its recovery from a profit downturn and simulation shows how both, the cash flow and profitability, increased due to changes in the IT per employee ratio and a change from global commercial targets to basic markets. I have been asked to review the project and determine the Critical Performance Factors for future use with FAR clients.
