Marketing and Advertising Specialist Intern

Longwood University Office of Diversity & Inclusion

This internship experience has allowed me the opportunity to apply class work to real world projects for various employment fields. I am currently responsible for the following:

  • Independently develop marketing materials for programs, services, and activities sponsored by the Office of Diversity & Inclusion
  • Develop methods to incorporate social media into programming efforts
  • Represent the Office of Diversity & Inclusion through professional attire and action
  • Adapt to changing work environments and conduct meetings with university administrators 
  • Develop a public relations campaign to educate the campus community about the programs and services offered in the Office of Diversity & Inclusion
  • Use artistic skills and creativity to develop a logo and brand for the Student Diversity & Inclusion Council
  • Write pre- and post-event press releases about office activities and programs for The Rotunda, Farmville Herald, local radio stations, and LU Public Relations department

At this time, I am working towards a Bachelor's of Arts Degree in Communication Studies with a concentration in Organizational Communication and Public Relations.  In addition to this major, I have completed the necessary coursework for a minor in Psychology.

While at Longwood, I have had the privilege of participating as a member in a variety of student clubs and organizations; some of which have become successful leadership opportunities.  During my five semesters at Longwood, I have participated in several organizations  that are listed under the Involvement section of this CV. I have surpassed a number of personal goals in addition cultivating professional and academic growth.

Associates

Central Virginia Community College

I earned three Associates Degrees in Liberal Arts, Education, and General Studies and graduated with Cum Laude honors. I additionally served as the Student Government Association Secretary (05-06), Student Government Vice-President (06-07) and as Spanish Club President during my time at CVCC. 

Objective

Upon my expected graduation on May 12, 2012, I hope to secure an entry level job position in the Public Relations industry.  As a student and professional, I pride myself on my strong writing and speaking skills, as well as intermediate knowledge in both the French and Spanish Language.  

Currently, I am serving as the Advertising and Marketing  intern for the Longwood University Office of Diversity and Inclusion.  I work under the supervision of the Director.  This internship experience has allowed me the opportunity to apply class work to real world projects for various employment fields.

Summary

I am a highly motivated and involved individual that enjoys opportunities to work with others in order to make a difference. Within my Communication Studies major, my concentration is in organizational communication and public relations. Therefore, I am knowledgeable in how to effectively run and enhance organizations while maintaining a positive public image. My studies encompassed crisis and risk prevention, interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, etc. within my major; therefore I have a variety of skills that will contribute to the functioning of any organization.  

I am extremely comfortable traveling and working independently. I have experience in building rapport and motivating others to fulfill their potential. I am able to think quickly in emergency situations and in those requiring quick assessment of many factors in order to make appropriate decisions. I am considerate of others, yet I am able to stand up for what is right if the occasion calls for it. I am always looking ahead, and for “what could be”. I try to lead by example, and I feel that is my signature leadership quality.

  • Served as a public relations consultant to the Longwood University Assessment & Institutional Research organization for a class project
  • Conducted a competitive analysis as well as an audience and market analysis
  • Suggested strategies and tactics for success for our client
  • Researched and identified media outlets and contacts for potential incentives and advertising
  • Developed assessment strategies to determine levels of success

Team Manager, Blue Ridge Communication Consultants

  • Conducted an internal communication audit as a class project
  • Served as Client Liaison for the team and negotiated confidentiality agreement with client representative
  • Ensured deadlines were met, organized schedules of clients and team members, and recorded minutes
  • Gathered data through nine client interviews and released a survey that received an 88% response rate
  • Analyzed data to determine organizational strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvement
  • Compiled and presented an official audit report to the client

Panhellenic Delegate, Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority, Zeta Tau Chapter

Served as an ambassador between the sorority’s executive board and Longwood University’s College Panhellenic Council and voted on behalf of Alpha Sigma Tau on campus issues 

  • Maintained relationships with twenty-one social Greek organizations and presented College Panhellenic Council news during Alpha Sigma Tau chapter meetings
  • Instrumental in operational functions and rituals of the sorority
  • Utilized an outgoing, energetic, and enthusiastic attitude along with excellent presentation skills to present philanthropy events to Panhellenic council to solicit support and motivate chapter members

I have held several jobs in the sales and service fields where I used excellent customer service skills in my daily tasks. 

Public Relations

My degree concentration is in public relations, therefore I understand how proper strategies and tactics contribute to an organization's success.  Throughout my college career I have had many expediencies , working with student organizations and class in projects where I created and distriubted flyers, banners, pamphlets,  tshirts, etc.    More recently I have been working as an advertising and marketing specialist intern for the Longwood University Office of Diversity and Inclusion.  Additionally, I have had the privilege of working in multiple group projects that require a collective understanding and completing of creative efforts in the public relations field.

Research Skills

During my undergraduate years at Longwood University I have had the opportunities to conduct personal research for the purpose of completing assignments and responsibilities.  This includes but is not limited to use of online catalogs, survey distribution, data analysis, focus group facilitation and interviews.  I have experience using APA and MLA styles of writing and citation.
