In 1991, Ira Smolev left a successful career in media and advertising to focus on investing full time. He has since backed businesses in real estate, online services, and other industries as an investor or principal. Ira Smolev recently invested in Presser Direct LLC, which makes and sells consumer products, including a combination humidifier, space heater, and air purifier. The company produces much of its merchandise in China before exporting it to Canada, the United States, and several countries in Europe.Prior to becoming a full-time investor, Ira Smolev ran his own media and advertising company for 17 years. When he founded the business in 1974, it focused on purchasing unused advertising slots in print inserts distributed throughout the United States. As proprietor of the firm, Mr. Smolev turned around and sold the company’s advertising space to clients. He then filled spaces that remained unsold with his own ads for housewares, cosmetics, and jewelry. After 10 years of working in the print advertising sphere, Ira Smolev expanded his business’ purview to include television advertising. He bought up unused advertising time from Discovery Network, American Movie Classics, Lifetime, and more than 40 other local and national television networks, then offered it to his clients. As he had done in print, he used any unsold ad slots for his own advertising.Ira Smolev has also held positions in the software and marketing industries ranging from Systems Engineer at IBM to Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Automated Marketing Systems, Inc. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Mr. Smolev laid the foundation for his career at City College of New York, from which he graduated in 1965 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
