Introduction to Creative Writing

An introductory online creative writing course offers a survey of different genres and literary forms.

Students practice writing fiction, drama, essays and poetry and learn about voice, structure and

word choice. In addition to using a word processor, students may need to use PDF readers and

media software to access all course materials. This course is usually taken by English majors or

undergraduates interested in learning more about creative writing.

Creative Nonfiction

Creative nonfiction combines factual information with a narrative style that resembles fictional

works; the genre includes personal essays and memoirs. Students read books on the craft as well

as representative examples of published works. They also complete writing exercises and longer

assignments that let them explore creative nonfiction techniques; these assignments are submitted

through e-mail or a course management system. This course is often offered as a continuing

education class and is aimed at both professional and amateur writers.

Short Story Writing

Students learn about the short story form and practice writing short stories through several graded

assignments. A short story class may be aimed at adults seeking continuing education or at MFA

students. In addition to writing stories for assignments, students may read books on craft as well as

representative short stories.
