Independent Lake Camp
- Thompson, PA US
Providing outstanding overnight coed camping adventures for youth ages 6-17, Independent Lake Camp offers a wide array of activities designed to challenge and enrich the lives of its campers. One of the more popular activities at Independent Lake Camp is its Circus Program, which teaches a range of popular circus arts, including the flying trapeze. Long a favorite act with traditional commercial circuses, the flying trapeze has gained recent popularity with youth and adults alike, both for the thrill of it and for its many health benefits. Few physical activities build muscle and bone as effectively as leveraging one’s body weight against gravity. While youthful campers may find it a source of fun, adults and, in particular, women over 30 can use trapeze “flying” to delay the onset of osteoporosis and improve their muscle tone, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. Some students of the flying trapeze report experiencing increased body awareness, elevated self-esteem, better physical timing, and more trust in their ability to self-challenge, all while becoming more relaxed in the process. In some cases, students have also reported improved sleep habits and weight loss.
