An initial design of gearbox a 2 speed w/ reverse transmission is constructed. The transmission is connected to a motor through means of a single disc clutch and will rotate 3 individual output shafts at specified speed and torque requirements. Three output shafts positioned as follows; S1 at 0º, S2 at 90, and S3 at 90º with respect to the input shaft. Each shaft is to spin at specified rpm and is also required to transmit a calculated torque. Shaft 1 is also required to revolve counter clockwise with the same rpm as the motor. The operator of the transmission is able to reverse rotation and switch between high speed and low speed of the output shaft by means of two separate control levers. The transmission is designed with safe, reliable, and low maintenance operation considerations in mind.
The solid works program helped us to visualize the system. It would have been beneficial to have a larger knowledge base of bearing design as well as other gear types (bevel, spur, helical, etc.).This project provided a practical understanding of gearing systems, calculating the shaft size, transmission of movement, and manual transmissions.
