Skills

Development of Specialized Programs grades 5-12

I have developed a program at the middle school and the high school in our district to meet the needs of students with cognitive disabilities. This requires understanding and integration of the Common Core Learning Standards, New York State Alternative Assessment Requirements, New York State Regents requirements, Career Development and Occupational Standards and the goals of individual students.

Modification of Curriculum Grades K-9

I have worked for 20 years modifying curriculum for students to meet their unique needs. This requires depth of knowledge of standards, curriculum and the individual student.

De-escalation Techniques

Ability to use techniques to aide in the management of students who experience high levels of anxiety. These techniques are verbal and visual prompts without the use of physical prompts.

Behavior Specialist

Ability to observe and measure behaviors to develop a plan to mediate the behavior to meet specific goals.

Educational Philosophy

My educational philosophy revolves around the individual student. I believe that teachers set the bar for their students and by knowing each child individually we can push each child to reach his/her maximum potential. It is our charge as teachers to help shape and develop the future citizens of a democratic society. They need to be informed decision makers, innovators and to understand compassion and empathy for others. They need to be functional members of their society and play an active role in the collective decision making in their communities. Our students of the future must be able to work with others, and form positive relationships. I believe that my role as a teacher revolves around teaching how to make informed decisions, teaching content embedded in real world situations, modeling positive social interactions, modeling and demonstrating compassion and empathy for others. Education has shifted from being a place to learn content, to being a global citizen. It is important that our students  enter the world prepared to be problem solvers and collective thinkers.
