University of Alabama

I am a distance learning student at the University of Alabama pursuing a second Bachelors Degree in Nutrition and Hospitality Management. After graduating Barnard College of Columbia University in May of 2011 I realized that mental health is very much dependant on good nutrition. Thus, I felt it necessary to become a Registered Dietitian so that I can successfully integrate the two fields and help as many people obtain optimal mental and physical health.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College

After graduating from Barnard College of Columbia University in May of 2011, I returned home to Biloxi, MS with the goal of helping the citizens of Mississippi live healthier lifestyles. To do so I needed to learn more about nutrition. However, because my Bachelors degree from Barnard is in Psychology I did not have all of the required prequisities to enter a Didactic Program in Dietetics. Thus, I enrolled in a local community college to acquire the prerequisites courses required so that I could apply to a Didactic Program in Dietetics and become a Registered Dietitian.

Barnard College of Columbia University

After I graduated high school in May of 2007 I moved to New York City to attend Barnard College, the all women liberal arts college of Columbia University. While attending Barnard College I studied Psychology and Dance. It was at Barnard College that I fell in love with nutrition, fitness, and wellness. Around my Junior  year I realized that I wanted to spend the rest of my life educating and helping people live the healthiest, and thus, happiest lives possible.

Cheryl Black

Mrs. Black taught me most of what I know about dance. She is an amazing teacher and I am fortunate to now be employed as an Dance Instructor at her studio in which I grew up.

Scott Logan

Mr. Logan was my supervisor when I worked as the Fitness Attendant and Group Fitness Instructor at the Salvation Army Kroc Center.

Tonya Hays

Mrs. Hays had directed, taught, and supported me throughout all of my performing arts as well as academic endeavors. She is a wonderful mentor that I am blessed to have.

My name is Haley Moon and I am currently pursuing my second Bachelors degree in Nutrition and Hospitality Management at the University of Alabama. After I complete the undergraduate program I will continue on and pursue my Masters degree in Nutrition also from the University of Alabama. Then, I will complete a dietetic internship and be eligible to sit for the Registered Dietitian exam in the Spring of 2015. I plan on specializing in Sports Nutrition with an emphasis in mental health.

Excerpt from Barnard College Senior Thesis

Happy Health Blog

My goal in life is to integrate the fields of Psychology and Sports Nutrition. I believe they go hand in hand. For good mental health to be obtained good nutrition is a must and vice versa. As a native of Biloxi, Mississippi I follow the national updates regarding the quickly growing rates of both obesity and depression in the state of Mississippi. I find it extremely interesting that there is a correlation between the two issues. Having dealt with obesity, depression, PTSD, and increased symptoms of depression caused from consistent weight gain myself, I have a special place in my heart for people dealing with those same issues, especially adolescents. While I want to share my theories and findings with everyone in the world I want to first start spreading my knowledge around Mississippi so that the citizens of Mississippi can lead the rest of the country and world by example. I plan to use my knowledge of fitness, psychology, and sports nutrition, as well as my compassion for people dealing with mental health and obesity issues, to better the world one Mississippian at a time.
