Social Media

I use social media to connect with others, boost my personal brand, and network with public relations professionals. Recently, I used Twitter to help publicize a fundraiser for the San Diegueno Middle School Band. By notifying followers that the band was selling discounted tickets for the Buick Invitational at the Torrey Pines Golf Course, I was able to raise money for instrument repairs, music coaches and sheet music.

My audio slideshow was featured on the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication's Web site. The slideshow tells a day-in-the-life story about another university student, Christy Austin. I took the photos, recorded and edited the audio interview and assembled the mix in Soundslides.

I've also completed several blog projects for classes at the University of Oregon. This blog is a compilation of research about sex education programs at public schools in the United States.

I also created a blog as part of a group project for my Principles of Public Relations class. The blog analyzes public relations and publicity tactics used by the animal rights organization PETA.


In August 2010 I will graduate from the University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism: Public Relations and a minor in Communication Studies. As I prepare to graduate and begin my career in public relations, I do so with a passion for the field, a strong moral compass, and a desire to grow and refine my skills. I am technologically savvy and look forward to combining both the tradtional and contemporary aspects of public relations in my career. I aspire to pursue a career that is exciting, rewarding, and above all interesting.

I am currently searching for an internship or entry-level position in the public relations, events management, publicity or communications fields. I like the idea of serving as an intermediary between an organization and its publics. One thing I've learned is that two-way communication and transparency is always something to strive for, which is a new and fundamental shift in the public relations field. I've also been exposed to social media and have begun to understand it's importance, potential and relevance for a public relations practitioner. In addition to social media, my specialties include strategic planning, writing and media relations. This is an exciting time for the communications field and I am anxious to apply what I have learned at the University of Oregon. One of the greatest aspects of public relations is that it is incredibly broad. While I am open to gaining experience in several different facets of the field, at this point I am particularly interested in gaining some entry-level agency experience. I am also interested in theatre and arts publicity, communication and outreach. I grew up performing in community theatre productions, and pursuing a career in this type of public relations and marketing would be a great way to combine both of my passions.
