Leadership Philosophy

I believe the leadership philosophy that best represents my philosophy as a nurse leader is a democratic leadership style.  Since employees have an equal say in the decision-making process, they are more committed to the desired outcome.  Consequently, the collaborative environment created by this style often results in more thorough solutions to problems.  Many employees like the trust they receive and respond with cooperation, team spirit, and high morale, all aspects of leadership I value. Finally, I feel the democratic style can produce sustainalbe long term high quality and high quantity work.

Leadership Exemplar

During my time as the Clinical Director of the University of Virginia SitFit Exercise Program at the Renal Services department at the University of Virginia Medical Center, I was able to raise the program to a national level and was considered a leader and innovator in the United States in the area of physical activity and renal disease. I was able to serve as a national speaker/author at national patient education associations (such as the National Kidney Foundation and the Renal Support Network), promoting the benefits of exercise in patients with renal disease.  Our patient outcomes served as a standard for the renal disease population throughout the United States.
