Work experience

Features Editor

Phuket Gazette

This was a highly responsible position, in which I managed the weekly content and output of 27 pages of a weekly news publication with a team of eight, both foreign and Thai staff. Included within these pages were technology, business/finance, property, sports and news feature articles that I helped source and then allocate to reporters, desk editors and contributing writers. Other daily responsibilities involved chairing editorial meetings, event/advertising meetings with local and international business interests and media sponsorship contract negotiations. With one of Phuket's most dynamic web sites, I was also instrumental in adding three new sections to the site (Sport, Business and Property); additionally, I had sole responsibility for the content management of these sections and upload of copy on a daily basis. Administration and management of the Gazette limited my ability to write as much as I would have preferred, but it was my remit to conduct high profile interviews and reviews, especially those from the world of sport and business. Page layout and photography are other strengths that ensured I was promoted from a desk editor to Features Editor in just five months.

Independent Contactor

Scribendi Inc.

I work as an Independent Contractor for one of the world’s largest proofreading and editing companies, Scribendi Inc. My daily tasks include analysis, editing and proofreading of a range of documents and manuscripts that emanate from sectors, such as the media (press releases and articles), business (contracts, CVs, reports), education (theses and dissertations) and literature (novels, prose and poems).

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am more than happy to provide both a personal and professional reference for Mr. Neil Quail.

I have known Neil since 2005 when I had the pleasure of having him as one of my students in a teaching certification course in Phuket, Thailand.  Since that period,  I have followed Neil’s career in writing, editing and journalism.  I have great respect for him as a knowledgeable, thoughtful, inspiring writer and I know that he has the skills to excel in any work environment.  He is capable of meeting deadlines, working in a team environment and producing material that is above the average.

Neil is a person of strong character and is adaptable to any and all circumstances and he is one of the most sincere and dependable people that I know.  I would not hesitate to recommend him for any position, and I believe that his greatest talents lie in his ability to understand human behavior and to put deep thoughts into elegant words that his target audience will be drawn to.

I value Neil as a colleague and a friend, and I know I have learned much more from working with him than he from I.  If given the chance to work with Neil again I would not hesitate to have him on my team.

If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me at +971 50 464 5002 or at[email protected].

Dear Hiring Manager, Neil reported to me during my time as Features Editor at the Phuket Gazette, a weekly English-language newspaper in the south of Thailand. Our newspaper at the time was the number one read in the south of the country and was also distributed in a national edition inside our sister paper, The Nation. Neil has a natural flair for reporting and editing and has a nose for a story. It's why I recommended him to our publisher for his original position as desk editor, it's why I assigned him as our sports editor shortly after he joined, and it's also why I recommended that he take over my position when I left for Singapore. Neil is a strong writer, tenacious in his ability to gather facts, and report them accurately and with consideration for his readers. If there was a record for the most amount of stories published by one editor during their tenure, then he would most certainly take it. He has an ability to churn out copy and works hard to ensure the his copy is clean, well-structured and accessible. I have no hesitation recommending Neil. He's also a thoroughly nice guy. I hope this helps. Excuse me for now, I'm on deadline. Feel free to reach me on my work or personal email. Best -- Fraser Morton Broadcast Journalist Fox International Channels Singapore
