Senior Infrastructure Analyst

EADS Cassidian

Although initially employed as an Oracle DBA at EADS my responsibilities have grown since I started and I perform a wide ranging infrastructure role. I have been recognized for my ability to absorb new techniques and technology and due to this I have worked on many implementations of new internal solutions ranging from implementation and management of virtual environments and storage arrays, corporate applications, monitoring and management tools and major projects which involve the design and build of completely new infrastructure. I also deputize for the Back Office Operations team leader covering management responsibility when he is unavailable.

Key Contributions:

  • Designed a new infrastructure to be used to consolidate storage across multiple security classifications fitting guidelines from the UK Government's National Technical Authority for Information Assurance (CESG).
  • Designed and implemented a complete infrastructure for a shared service organization for an EADS company called Innovation Works. This incorporated server hardware, multiple EMC SANs, a Brocade fabric connect with Qlogic FCIP storage routers, VMware ESXi4 and VMware Site Recovery Manager along with guest OS and Applications.
  • Designed a disaster recovery solution to suit the company business continuity and disaster recovery plan.
  • Designed and implemented the UK businesses first VMware environment to reduce our server sprawl and power consumption.
  • Setup management systems such as Oracle Grid Control, HP Insight Control Environment, Microsoft System Centre and Altiris.

Housing Department, Torfaen County Borough Council

Within the Housing Department of Torfaen Council my duties ranged from; the administration of Oracle and SQL Server databases, the implementation of a number of new systems, analysis of business requirements, the production of accurate specifications for software development and bug finding and fault fixing of Housings applications. I regularly attended national user group meetings for the purpose of information sharing and collaboration with other organizations in order to enhance our software and to identify and implement more efficient business practices.

Key Contributions:

  • The migration of the databases used for the main OLTP housing system from Oracle 9i to Oracle 10g.
  • Installed, configured and designed universes for Business Objects 6.5.
  • A key role for Housing in the corporate disaster recovery plan, working with Torfaen's Information Systems Unit and ICM.
  • Successful completion of the Housing departments financial year end project, two years running.
  • Specified a major enhancement to the Housing management system to carefully manage duplicate records which was adopted by all other customers using the software.

In my role as the Systems Administrator and Development Officer I was responsible for the Maintenance, Development and Training on the Housing / Finance / Repairs department software. I liaised with the software developer to create bespoke enhancements for the systems, while also dealing with any user queries arising with their systems and the departments' hardware.
