Technology In Action

  • In previous deployments and assignments, I have been directly involved with server security and hardening of Windows 2000/2003/2008 server – utilizing forms and combinations of server templates, group policy settings, objects and templates, local/domain security settings, file/folder share security, security configuration wizards, patches/hotfixes/updates, and baseline security analyzers to tighten up users’ rights, access-control and account permissions and settings. Most environments ranged from one to ten servers.
  • I have worked with various forms of patch/update management systems (mostly WSUS or Kaseya/Ncentral monitoring) to ensure that all servers/workstations/devices on customer/employer networks are running with the latest versions of software or firmware.
  • I am very knowledgeable in DNS, both in external/Internet, and internal/private/LAN settings, how they are similar, how they differ, and how they can be setup to work seamlessly together. I am a big proponent of OpenDNS to create reliable and secure DNS resolution.
  • I am very knowledgeable in HIPAA compliancy requirements and have been involved in organizing policies and procedures for many past customers/employers to ensure that privacy and security is first and foremost when it comes to patient/customer data and information.
  • I have been involved in ethical hacking /perimeter security/penetration testing services to ensure the safety and reliability of customers’/employers’ organizational network infrastructures. Most involved the use of port/vulnerability scanners (such as NMap, eEye Retina/Blink or Microsoft Base Security Analyzer).
  • I have been involved in the IT support and service industry as both an external IT consultant and as an internal IT support staff member, so I am familiar with the challenges that both sides of the industry face when it comes to fulfilling the technology needs for businesses. I was part-owner in a company that was one of the first in the area to offer managed services as a primary means of service and revenue. The managed service provider (MSP) approach to IT support is a much more pro-active and pre-emptive way to ensure that the IT needs of an organization are met and expectations are regularly exceeded. The traditional break-fix service model is no longer viable.
