Zach Gillikin

My name is Zachary Gillikin; I am an 18 year old senior at Cape Hatteras Secondary School of Coastal Studies. I am a very outgoing person who gets along well with others and is not afraid to meet new people and do new things. I am an active volunteer for my community doing many activities with organizations such as The National Park Service and NOAA, just to name a few. I have also been recognized as a leader in my school as I have been voted into multiple Student Government positions and have been voted captain of both my football and baseball team. I am an avid outdoorsman, I enjoy anything that gets me outside and I have a profound love for the ocean and all activities on it. It has always been my goal to pursue a career on the water and I will soon be fulfilling this goal as I will be attending the United States Coast Guard Academy in June for a degree in Government. I pride myself on living my life by the core values of the Coast Guard Academy which will soon be apart of my everyday life; honor, respect, and devotion to duty. I will work hard in any task that is set before me, and will do so with honor and responsibility.

Community Service

In fifth grade I helped establish a student volunteer program that did work with the National Park Service, NOAA. the Marine Mammal Stranding Network, NEST (Network for Endangered Sea Turtles), and the North Carolina Trails System.  I have also done a vast amount of volunteer work with the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, aboard the recreational scuba diving boat Flying Fish, and with the Big Buddy Program through Cape Hatteras Elementary School.  Based solely upon my volunteer activities I was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from North Carolina Congressman Walter B. Jones after accumulating over 300 hours of community service hours in one year.

I have been an active member of the Cape Hatteras Secondary School Student Government Association and am currently the SGA Vice-President.  In fifth grade I helped organize a student volunteer program through the National Park Service, NOAA, and many other organizations; I was the only student to stay with this program and helped recruit others to join.  This June I will be attending the United States Coast Guard Academy whose core values are based around leadership.  I have also been a team Captain of my high school baseball team for two years and captain of my football team for one year, and have been recognized for my leadership in both of these sports.
