Shadowing a Professional Criminal Lawyer

Phillip Cohen Solicitors

Criminal law has always interested me greatly. I have been able to gain work experience with Phillip Cohen Solicitors since I was still undertaking my higher education at school.

Over this time I have been able to experience the life of a criminal lawyer in Court and witness the process of a case before it is taken thus far.

During my time here I shadowed a professional lawyer at the Sheriff Court in Glasgow, experiencing interviews, court cases and verdicts. It was extremely interesting and provided me with life experience away from a textbook in order to understand the work of a criminal lawyer in the Criminal Justice System.

A Week of Professional Work Experience

Burness Paul

During the summer of 2015 I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to spend a week at Burness Paul, a top tier Scottish Commercial law firm.

Throughout this week I was able to spend time working in each department alongside trainee lawyers who had just graduated university and lawyers who had been in the profession a number of years. It was an invaluable experience, gaining a first-hand experience in the world of work.

I was assigned many individual tasks as well as group work. It taught me to think independently as well as being able to participate in group tasks, ensuring that time limits and standards of work were met.

University of Strathclyde

I am currently halfway through my LLB Law Degree at the University of Strathclyde. It is an intense and intriguing course, expanding my legal knowledge greatly from week to week. It has already thoroughly deepened my excitement and ambition to pursue a career in the field of Law.

I am an extremely driven and determined person, putting all of my efforts into any task which I undertake. These skills have helped me greatly at University, ensuring that I am ahead with all assigned work and gaining good grades.

The academic side of a degree is very important, however, the social aspect is also very important especially in the field of Law where communication is crucial. Strathclyde offers many opportunities to gain first hand experience in being a lawyer including the Law Clinic and The Mooting Society. I aim to pursue my interests in these societies throughout the third and fourth year of my degree.

School Career

Hutchesons' Grammar School

I completed my education in 2014, qualifying with AAAAB in my higher curriculum. The classes which I undertook were; English, Spanish, French, Modern Studies and Geography. I also have a qualification in Mathematics.

At school I was determined to succeed in order to follow my intentions of studying Law at university. These grades enabled me to do so and I am very fortunate to be able to study a subject that I have such interest in.

In my spare time I also write a blog focusing on fashion and beauty. It has always been an extra passion of mine and so I like to dedicate some of my free time to it. I set it up over a year ago now and it is growing steadily.

Strong Leadership Skills

I have a lot of leadership experience. I have spent a couple of summers leading a children's summer group, responsible for the taking care of them and also for the organising of activities. Additionally, throughout my school career I was the captain of my hockey team and also of the athletics team. This has really helped to increase my confidence and be able to be organised for not just myself, but others.

Team Player

Throughout both my school career and university career I have always been a great team player. Since I was young I have  been involved in team sports such as hockey and running events, competing at a high level. Being able to work and function as a strong team has taught me great values such as seeing the best in everyone and adapting in certain circumstances to situations surrounding other team members in order to achieve the best for every person.

As well as working in a team I competed to a high level individually. This level of competition has enabled me to be individually very driven and focused and also to be able to cope under great amounts of pressure.
