Regional Operations Manager

Supervised an immediate staff of 22, providing 24/7 nationwide logistics support to Ministry of Defence (MoD) charter aircraft and Royal Air Force (RAF) transport aircraft operating through UK mainland civil airports. Successfully handling over 42,000 passengers and 400,000 + kgs of airfreight in 2011.

Effectively co-ordinated all MoD core tasking, responsible for the import and export of all MoD airfreight transiting UK civilian airports. Liaised closely with air cargo handling agents, HM Customs, consignees and 3PL providers to ensure the swift clearing and forwarding of all AOG, restricted and hazardous military airfreight.  

Achieved strong working relationships with airport management and ground handling agents at 9 civilian airports. Managed third party relations and co-ordinated continuous contract monitoring of all MoD air charter and ground handling contracts and service level agreements provided by airlines, ground handling agents and 3PL providers.

Directed ground operations for all MoD chartered and RAF heavy-lift air transport aircraft operating through Birmingham and East Midlands International Airports. Provided ground loading/unloading supervision of Boeing C17 and AN124 project airfreight loads.

Developed robust operational strategies by continually assessing logistical processes, utilising internal and external QA auditors to perform department and process audits, highlighting areas for improvement. Reviewed audit reports and implemented changes to SOPs where necessary to achieve optimal working practices.

Logistics subject matter expert for a self sustained military organisation of 2,800 personnel capable of rapid world-wide deployment, planning and managing bespoke multi-modal logistics solutions for time-critical world-wide deployments.  Successfully moved over 3500 passengers and 260,000+ kgs of project cargo on time and on budget.

Coordinated the import and export of all organisational project air freight. Completing all air-waybills, DG shipper’s declarations, manifests and customs entries, planned, prepared and check-weighed all aircraft loads ensuring compliance with IATA dangerous goods regulations and completed aircraft weight and balance. Supervised the loading of aircraft and restraint of cargo loads.

Identified and delivered operational cost reductions by implementing an initiative to streamline the deployment process of military units and reduced the organisation’s impact on available airlift capacity by 60%, generating indirect efficiency savings to UK Defence.

Coordinated the import and export of all organisational project ocean freight. Planned shipping loads and booked ISO containers and shipping space, completed all shipping documentation and ensured compliance with IMDG regulations.  Supervised the vanning of ISO containers, check-weighing, crane operations and road transportation of all project cargo loads destined for UK seaports.

Planned and coordinated the cross-border movement by road and sea of all vehicles and project cargo loads travelling to military exercise sites in Europe, Scandinavia and North America, liaising with consignors, embassies, customs agencies, shipping lines and 3PL hauliers to ensure the prompt delivery of time critical equipment.

Developed a successful change management programme of briefings to provide advice and guidance up to director level, leading to increased awareness and greater positive attitudes towards new logistical processes. This in turn led to a time saving and more effective process management.

Efficiently co-ordinated the global operations of 175 cross-functional managers and staff belonging to a highly mobile military logistics organisation providing ground handling and air cargo support functions for RAF transport aircraft operating on overseas routes.

Responsible for the strategic planning and tactical execution of the organisation’s global tasking. Effectively managed resources to ensure operational capability was maintained for all overseas mobile route tasking and static RAF terminal and air cargo operations world-wide.

Regularly liaised with both internal and external departmental managers, ensuring that all HR, financial, technical and transport support functions were available to all team leaders and staff at all stages of the tasking process.

Instrumental in the successful planning and delivery of a complex and time-critical project to changeover personnel in an operational theatre. Successfully transporting 11,000 passengers and their equipment over a 4 week period that set a UK Defence benchmark.

Successfully co-ordinated the administration of all staff, maintaining rosters and ensuring all appraisals, training courses and welfare support took place as necessary. Monitored the accuracy, collation and storage of all administrative records, as well as the comprehensive briefing and debriefing of managers and team leaders.

Mobile Ramp Operations Manager

Managed an immediate staff of 35, engaged in air transport terminal, cargo and ramp activities providing fast and efficient services for both strategic, wide bodied passenger and cargo aircraft and tactical C-130 transport aircraft. Managed all aspects of ramp safety, air cargo security, airfreight documentation, load preparation, load planning and physical loading functions. Sole C17 Ground Loading Supervisor responsible for the safe and efficient loading/unloading of heavy-lift airfreight loads aboard C17 and AN124 airframes.

Managed the high tempo Engines Running Off/On load (ERO) ramp operations at an austere Temporary Landing Zone (Dirt Strip). Managed all aspects of ramp safety, air cargo security and airfreight documentation. Supervised the planning and preparation of all aircraft loads and directed the physical loading/unloading of all tactical in-theatre C-130 aircraft. Receiving a commendation for delivering outstanding service.

Led teams of logistics specialists onboard C-130 and C-17 aircraft, providing down route ground loading support to the aircraft, specialising in out-sized loads (Helicopter airframes, aero engines, armour, ground handling and heavy plant equipment) and UN Class 1 consignments. Supervised team members engaged in passenger and airfreight processing, load planning, load control, cargo preparation, and the physical loading and restraint of aircraft loads.

Supervised an immediate staff of 30, engaged in air cargo export, load control and traffic duties at a large UK military air cargo hub. Responsible for the safe and efficient reception and acceptance of all air cargo exports, air cargo security, completion of all airwaybills, DGNs, aircraft manifests, NOTACs, aircraft load plans and trim sheets, consignment tracking and building of aircraft pallets, physical loading of aircraft and restraint of air cargo loads.
