Shawn Gaines

Shawn Gaines

Summary

My name is Shawn Gaines. I am from Tappahannock, Virginia and I will be a senior this fall here at Longwood University (which will start the fourth year of my undergraduate education). I am a Communication Studies major and my concentration is Organizational Communication and Public Relations. I am involved with the Student Diversity and Inclusion Council and I work in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion as a student aid to the director.

Throughout my time at Longwood, I worked as the Programming Chair for the Student Diversity and Inclusion Council. I was responsible for coordinating several educational programs that promoted the celebration and advocacy for people of all social identities. Through this experience I was able to increase my ability to work collaboratively with others. I engaged my peers as we navigated sensitive issues pertaining to diversity. I have facilitated small group discussions and gave presentations on Social Justice. These experiences have allowed me to asses my entry point into the world and have further enhanced my ability to advocate and educate others about diversity and social justice. My work with the Student Diversity and Inclusion Council has given me a greater understanding of myself while building my ability to communicate with people who have different ideas.
