Led student interns & assisted lead assistant professor in an eight-month long project to humanize the "big science" of astronomy by connecting it to the actual people that make it work every day

*Mentored by Dr. A.T. Miller, GIEU founder & current associate vice provost for academic diversity initiatives at Cornell University

*Led student interns on-site alongside Dr. Christopher Miller, co-founder of the INternational Computational Astrostatistics (INCA) group

      • Pre-departure:

o    Earned nomination (over 200+ student interns) for 2011 GIEU Fellowship through competitive 2010 Vietnam site performance

o    1 of 9 nominees chosen through competitive interviewing performance

o    Participated in semester-long student fellow intercultural leadership seminar, led by Dr. A.T. Miller

      • Post-departure:

o    Assisted in administrative & logistical planning; budget-maintenance

o    Led team-planning and debriefing meetings focused on diversity and intercultural competence, project management, creating deadlines, realistic goal-setting and team brainstorming (pre-travel and on-site)

o    Facilitated individual leadership skill-building & fostered a sense of personal responsibility toward group project with each of the 15 student interns. Work resulted in: poster presentation, web-site production, data collection, potential grant acquisition for “Tololo” professional astronomical observatory

o    Compiled data on light pollution using light-meter readings

Competitive participation involving an ten-month commitment, training and assessments in conjunction with 30 day cross-country voyage from North to South Vietnam • Explored dichotomy between tradition and modernity through service work in orphanages & numerous NGOs • Experienced cultural institutions, rural & city life, and gained insight about Vietnamese history, culture, politics, environment, economy and the educational system through structured discourse, seminars and informal debriefings • Acquired exposure to the consequences and lasting legacies of war by visiting military grounds and memorial sites as well as witnessing the ongoing effects of chemical warfare and remaining UXOs in the DMZ area
