>2009: Produced, edited and wrote first official historical DVD for NCAA, including 100+ minutes of content that highlighted the greatest performances of Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal and Dwyane Wade. Added value with buzzer beaters, Cinderella stories and inspiring comebacks.

>2008: As Show Runner for Baseball’s Golden Age, developed entire 13-part documentary series that continues to air on Fox Sports Net today. Conducted more than 100 interviews with marquee former players, broadcasters, writers, historians and celebrities; stellar list includes Frank Robinson, Ernie Banks, Tim McCarver, Joe Torre, Tommy Lasorda, Joe Buck, Tom Brokaw, Larry King and Rudolph Giuliani.

>2008: Wrote, produced, directed and edited “Lifelock’s Coast to Coast: The College Basketball Season in Review” for Intersport / CBS Sports. Managed the budget as well as hired and supervised the staff for this comprehensive show.

>2007: Produced an extensive documentary project on Mixed Martial Arts, revealing the behind-the-scenes stories of four fighters and one promoter of Elite XC—the first Mixed Martial Arts company to be featured on television.

Created a pilot for a multi-part sports program that became an Emmy-nominated series for Fox

As the founder of Bald Bull, was challenged to conceptualize a format, interview style and an open for a 13-episode, 4-part series on the “golden years” of major league baseball. Criteria included content creation in 5 months with a small staff of 10. Pilot content: produced “Sights and Sounds of the Game;” “Ted Williams vs. Joe DiMaggio;” “Rivalries” (featuring the 3 legendary New York teams: the Yankees, Dodgers and Giants); “Call to the Pen”—a lyrical treatment of old-style baseball.

Strategic Execution:

·Pitched Fox Sports Net 12 additional shows following pilot completion. Working with 2 other producers, took only 2 months once project was green-lit to arrange and conduct more than 150 interviews throughout the US, with stellar sports, media and political personalities, e.g., Tom Brokaw, Larry King, Ernie Banks, Frank Robinson, Roger Kahn, Larry Merchant.

·Mastered a winning, conversational interview approach based on 40+ topics, tapping into a rich vein of stories.

·Assumed the lead role early in the project to become the show runner, i.e., the top supervising producer, overseeing the daily production staff and executive producer, as well as liaison between production staff and location staff.

·Rolled out all 12 shows on deadline in 4 months, shepherding at one point 7 shows in the pipeline—from rough cuts, fine cuts, and graphic cuts through to final deliveries. Collaborated with talent, e.g., Alec Baldwin, agents and interviewees.

Commercial Value: Produced “Baseball’s Golden Age”—a current staple of Fox Sports Net programming, and a twice Emmy-nominated series for Best Series and Best Writing. Also conceived 20 more programs for a Season 2 in the series.

Future Impact: Idea generation for branded entertainment: sports; reality shows; video content for social media sites.

Crafted a TV infomercial that exploded sales for a marquee brand’s innovative product

Recruited to produce an infomercial for the Bobby Jones Golf company, researched the newest club—a unique, hybrid in their product portfolio, exploring its singular features and marketability. Product was critical to firm’s viability in the market. Rapidly learned the history of this renowned brand, history of golf and types of golf clubs.

Commercial Production & Sales Insight:

·Used a soft-sell, storytelling approach to focus on the Hybrid, organizing multiple shoots in two locations.

·Integrated contradictory personal characteristics of the main talent, Ken Venturi—a celebrated golfer and announcer—and Jesse Ortiz who had designed this club. Blended direct-to-camera style with a more natural one to create a cohesive story.

·Landed a natural, 7-minute spot of Venturi and Ortiz conversing rather than being interviewed formally as the linchpin.

·Devised a sophisticated look for the golf clubs in a product shoot that was used for future advertising spots.

Key Value: Delivered successful advertising vehicle that premiered at the International Golf Show, with the Bobby Jones Hybrid golf club becoming the best-selling product in the history of the golf channel at the time. Helped leverage branded value to compete against industry leaders such as Nike and Calloway.

Future Impact: Create classy visuals, shape a strong message and story, and let a product “speak for itself” through the TV medium. Manage all aspects of often difficult, diverse personalities to reach consensus and streamline production.

Supervised every aspect of the production including a four Hi-Definition camera live concert shoot, with five different artists/bands including the Zombies, Denny Laine, and a reunion of Peter and Gordon for the first time in 37 years.Shot at BB King’s in New York hosted by Paul Shaffer. Conducted interviews, produced, and multi-cam edited the four-camera shoot into a two-hour concert DVD. Worked very closely with Paul Shaffer, the bandleader for the David Letterman Show and the concert’s executive producer to conceptualize the show

·PRODUCER/EDITOR: Motley Crue DVD “Red, White, and Crue: Carnival of Sins.”Supervised and conceptualized the DVD extras, all shot in Hi-Definition, including creating, multi-cam editing, field producing, and writing a 30 minute documentary, on their 2005 reunion tour entitled: “April 27, 2005, A Motley Documentary.”

·PRODUCER/EDITOR-Rod Stewart and Pete Rose biographies for A&E’s signature series, Biography.Cleared snippets of 29 songs for Rod Stewart documentary, and came in under budget.

·PRODUCER/EDITOR: Wilt Chamberlain: Larger than Life and Glory in Black and White: The Story of the 1966 NCAA Championship Game,between Texas Western and Kentucky. These two documentaries were part of a series of six shows produced for CBS Sports.

·PRODUCER/EDITOR: Bob Gibsonfor ESPN’s Emmy and Peabody Award-winning, SportsCentury series. The show included an interview with Gibson’s friend, Warren Buffet.

·PRODUCER/EDITOR: The World at Their Feet: A History of the United States Women’s Soccer Teamfor Bombo Sports and Entertainment, including interviews with President Clinton and his wife Secretary-of-State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

·PRODUCER/EDITOR: Stories from the Hall of Fame

A series of shows for The History Channel, that took in-depth looks at the Hockey, Baseball, Golf, Tennis, and Bowling Halls of Fame.

·PRODUCER/EDITOR: The Game that Changed the Game.

A look at the historic Michigan State vs. Indiana State 1979 NCAA Championship game that launched the careers of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, for Fox Sports Net. Field produced the first ever-joint interview of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, in which they sat down and spoke of the historic game.

·PRODUCER/EDITOR: Clemente. The Story of Roberto Clemente for Fox Sports Net.Jimmy Smits was the Voiceover talent. This was the first documentary ever produced for Fox Sports Net.

·FIELD PRODUCER: ESPN documentary series: Road Trip

A two-part documentary that took you behind-the-scenes and inside the hearts and minds of the U.S. Women’s National soccer team, as their quest for the 2004 World Cup took them all over the United States.Supervised two camera crews, conducted interviews, and helped conceptualize both shows travelling around the country with Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, Julie Food, and the rest of the team.

·FIELD PRODUCER/EDITOR: MTV Reality Show – Fast Enuff

Assisted in the show’s casting and conceptualization and was the field producer for a one week competition, where 15 contestants enrolled in the Skip Barber racing school and competed to win a car.

Worked with sports personalities including: Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield, Cris Collinsworth, Armen Keteyian, Don King, Emanuel Steward, Steve McNair, and Jeff Hostetler.

·PRODUCER: Conceptualized, supervised, edited, field produced, and produced Sports Illustrated’s consumer television commercials for over 10 years, including New York Yankees World Series Championship spots, NFL Kickoff spots, NCAA Final Four Championship spots, and Christmas spots involving Brett Favre, Troy Aikman, Steve Young, Jim Kelly, and comedian, Dom Irrera.Scouted locations, cast actors and actresses, and took part in every level of the commercial production process.

·Produced, edited, wrote, managed, and supervised the Official NCAA Final Four Home Video/DVD for over 15 years.

-Supervised up to five camera crews under the pressures of college basketball’s national championship tournament.

-Supervised a production crew of up to 10.

-Conducted coach and player interviews before and after the games.

-Put together a show averaging 50 minutes in length in less than 10 days.

·ASSOCIATE PRODUCER: Assisted with the editing, field production, organization, research, and writing for the Peabody-award winning, “When It Was a Game” Parts 1 and 2 for HBO Sports and for AMC’s “Diamonds on the Silver Screen” a documentary that focused on the history of baseball in the movies, hosted by James Earl Jones.

For over 12 years, I've worked with Eric on numerous projects with some very tight deadlines.  What I find to be his strength is his inability to compromise the integrity or the quality of the project to easily meet thosedeadlines.  But what I find most enjoyable about working with Eric is his knowledge of the subject matter, be it the history of baseball, NCAA basketball, the WWE, or Rock and Roll, Eric's attention to detail and willingness to dig up the best material available drives those who work with him to do the same.  That work ethic and passion for the material is why I enjoy working with Eric Paulen and hope to do so in the future.

Everyone involved with Baseball's Golden Age knew he was working on something special.  Using never-before-seen intimate color home movies of major league baseball dating back to the 1930's, the series explored not only our national pastime, but an important piece of the American fabric.  It was that recognition that helped a small crew of seven people churn out 13 episodes on a tight six month schedule.  As our Supervising Producer, Eric Paulen lent creative direction and helped us secure over 100 interviews of former major leaguers, writers, and historians from contacts he's made over the past 20 years.  This was a testament to his experience, organization, and ability to maintain relationships.  He's also a hell of an interviewer, who was able to elicit rich and powerful stories from men in their 80's (no easy task!).  The proof is in the results:  Baseball's Golden Age was nominated for two Emmy's in 2009, including Outstanding Edited Sports Series.             - Erik Kesten, Producer/Writer, Baseball's Golden Age
