A prominent Anesthesiologist and Intensivist, Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero serves as Director of Perioperative Clinical Research at the Duke Clinical Research Institute. His research examines the safety of blood transfusions, seeking clinical solutions to reduce complications for high-risk patients. His work also focuses on surgical site infection, and systemic inflammation during surgery and its connection to perioperative complications. Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, initially hired Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero as an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, and in 2008, he accepted the position of Professor of Anesthesiology. He was previously on staff at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero specializes in the clinical areas of critical care medicine and general and cardiac anesthesiology. He speaks frequently on his research findings at national and international medical events. His presentations have focused on such topics as “Risk Factors and Prevention of Surgical Wound Infection.” He accepted appointments to the Editorial Board of the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia and as Guest Editor for Anesthesia & Analgesia. Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero writes extensively for the Journal of Endotoxin Research and other publications in his field, including the periodical Anesthesiology. Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero affiliates with several medical societies. In 2002, the Association of University Anesthesiologists elected him to full membership. As a participant of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, he performed work on the Subcommittee on Clinical Circulation. He served on the Scientific Program Committee of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists for two years. Dr. Bennett-Guerrero holds a membership with the American Medical Association. A native New Yorker fluent in Spanish, Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero attended the prestigious Harvard University Medical School. The PBS program NOVA featured him in a television documentary series, Doctors’ Diaries. The documentary chronicles the professional development of seven of the medical school’s students from 1987 to the present. Dr. Bennett-Guerrero’s comments about his professional choices appear in video clips on the PBS website. Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero makes his home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where his civic involvement includes membership on the Town's Initiating Committee, overseeing a community-based process for the Comprehensive Plan. His charitable giving includes a scholarship program for aspiring public defenders at the University of Colorado Law School. Dr. Bennett-Guerrero spends his leisure time in family activities with his wife and two sons.
