Currently working for HPJV (Husab Project Joint Venture) based at Husab Mine in Namibia. The operation comprises of an open pit mine and the state of the art metallurgical processing plant designed to process 15 Mt/a of ROM (run of mine) at an average grade of 512 g/t, producing 7149 t/a of U3O8 at a recovery of 92%. HPJV is responsible for the construction and commissioning of this operation and I am part of the team as a Process Engineer assigned to cold and wet commissioning of the processing plant which comprises of Ore Crushing, Milling, Leach, Solid Liquid Separation (CCD Circuit), Ion Exchange, Solvent Extraction, Precipitation, Drying and Packaging; with the main focus on the Ion Exchange and the Solvent Extraction circuits. The team is made up of expatriates from across the globe.

Responsibilities

  • Acting Area Commissioning Manager
  • Coordinating and execution of all cold and hot commissioning activities.
  • Confirming equipment readiness ahead of cold and wet commissioning (Punch Items).
  • Ensuring progress and action taken on the outstanding punch list items to satisfy project requirements.
  • Ensuring accurate design specifications
  • Equipment testing and commissioning with water
  • Equipment monitoring, data gathering and analysis
  • Setting the equipment parameters for optimum utilization during hot-commissioning
  • Investigating, troubleshooting and repairing defects identified before and during cold and wet commissioning.
  • Identifying and communicating priority systems/sub-systems/Loops for effective and successful completion of commissioning with the area of responsibility.
  •  Liaise with the client regularly to discuss commissioning plans and giving update on the status of the project.
  • On the job training for operations personnel (Client’s operations team)
  • Overseeing and coordinating activities carried out within the area/system/sub-system of responsibility by other stakeholders; ie: construction, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation to ensure compliance with the company Health and Safety Standards
  • Maintaining a “site dairy” detailing activities and key events during cold-commissioning; Loop commissioning start-up dates, client witnessing dates and system/sub-system handover dates.
  • Participate in the compilation of the final cold-commissioning dossier for the client

Plant Metallurgist

Areva Resource Southern Africa, Namibian Operations

Based at Trekkopje Uranium Mine, which was a three phase uranium project, initial phase throughput was 47 000 tons per leach pad and produced 7 tons of uranium and the second phase throughput was 3.2 million tons per leach pad and produced 440 tons of uranium.

Responsibilities

  • Providing technical support to the production team.
  • Administration of daily production and supervision of plant personnel.
  • Generating and distributing accurate technical and production reports and presentations which were used for decision making.
  • Developing and implementing of the metallurgical accounting systems for the life of Midi (commercial plant).
  • Conducting feasibility analysis based on the pilot plants performance (Mini & Midi) for decision making towards the next phase of the project.
  • Managing the outsourced analytical laboratory and ensuring short turn around time in sample analysis, best laboratory practices and accurate results using up to date technologies. Review and analysis of plant operating costs.

Graduate Metallurgist

AngloGold Ashanti Vaal Reefs Operations, South Africa

Based at Kopanang gold plant and later relocated to Noligwa gold plant which had an average throughput of 370 000 tons and 240 000 tons per month respectively. The average gold production per month from the two plants was 750 kg for Kopanang plant and 1250 kg Noligwa plant.

Responsibilities

  • Completion of the metallurgical training program as set  out by Anglogold Ashanti.
  • Maintaining the credibility of the metallurgical accounting through sampling, data analysis and reporting.
  • Tonnage reconciliation between the shafts, surface sources and the plant.
  • Compiling monthly production forecasts, production reports and water balance reports.
  • Conducting underwater balance, leach profiles and carbon profiles.
  • By-product and waste management i.e. dispatching and accounting for gold in fine carbon, woodchips and mill liners.
  • Cyanide champion i.e. organising and facilitating the cyanide emergency drills.
  • Monitoring the Cyplus Oxitrol WAD CN analyser.
  • Review and updating of the issue based risk assessments
  • Conducting the plant safety inspections
  • Relieve as a Metallurgical Engineer when required.

Awarded a bursary by AnglogoldAshanti to obtain a B Tech in Extraction Metallurgy from the University of Johannesburg.

Practical work was done during holidays at Anglogold Ashanti's Kopanang Gold Plant, where I worked with Graduate Metallurgists in their day to day jobs, as well spent time at the control room to understand plant operation.

Based   at   Kopanang   gold   plant   which   had a monthly throughput of 85 000 tons reef and 285 000 tons waste per month, producing about 550 kg reef gold and 220 kg waste gold at recovery efficiency of between 95 and 96%.

Responsibilities

  • Management of shift personnel and administration of shift production.
  • Monitoring and optimizing reagents consumptions in the plant.
  • Planning and coordinating maintenance activities.
  • Maintaining the company standards in health, safety and environment  by  ensuring compliance with cyanide management code, risk assessments, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 1400.
