Summary

College is a very exciting time in your life. But, certain circumstances may cause nightmares instead. The information you're about to read will help you take the right approach.

When you are trying to choose a school that you would like to attend you should weigh all of the pros and cons of the school compared to what your major will be. You can find many lists that tell you what the department at the school you are interested in ranks.

When you first apply for college, learn about the professors. It is important to develop a good relationship with the instructors if you want to do well. Talk to them all, and get to know their expectations. It will help you throughout your entire college or university experience to have them on your side.

Eat breakfast before taking a test. Even just a container of yogurt or piece of fruit is beneficial. A growling stomach is the kind of testing distraction that you can easily avoid with a little preparation. At least eat something small to keep from being distracted.

If you can you should open up a bank account at a bank that also has branches in your home town. This way it will be easier for your parents to put money into your account and it be available right away instead of having to wait 3-5 business days.

Take advantage of the office hours offered by your academic instructors. These hours are provided for your benefit. There is no better source of help or information about a class than the person who teaches it! Use the time to ask questions, seek clarification, or discuss your in-class performance.

Do not crack under the stress of selecting or declaring a major right away. Some professors might try and draw you into their department early on, as the more students they have the more job security they have. Never rush major decisions, and do what is right for you, not anyone else.

The earlier you register for your college classes, the better. If you wait to long, you may not get into the classes you want. Register for your classes the first day that they are offered. That will ensure you aren't scrambling.

You will need to study a lot to keep your grades up, but take one day a week off to relax and regenerate. Approach your learning by immersing yourself in your courses. Talk about the subject to others, look for references to it in the world around you and apply it to your life in general.

You don't have to be a great student to get scholarships. There are scholarships that are specifically designed for average to below average students. These scholarships are often available through your school. Talk to your financial aid advisor to learn more about these types of scholarships and how to apply for them.

Prior to classes beginning, email your professor to find out which textbooks you will need for your class. Once you know what you need, rent your textbooks instead of purchasing them. This is a newer, but popular option that allows you to borrow textbooks for a semester for a much smaller fee than it would cost you to purchase them.

Eat well. You may have heard of the 'freshman fifteen', or the 15 pounds that many college freshmen gain when their moms are not watching their diets! Remember that good food makes you feel alert and energetic, and the wrong foods will make you tired and hinder your performance. Eat right!

There are many different types of colleges so be sure to choose one that is right for you. If you need more attention in the classroom, than a large school with 300 students to a class might not be your best bet. How you learn can greatly impact how you do at particular schools.

Every freshman should understand and realize that the freshman 15 does in fact exist. It is important that everyone take the necessary steps to ensure that they are getting proper nutrition during their first year in college. While it might be tempting to pile on some fries for dinner every night, you'll pay for it in the long run.

As previously mentioned, people should enjoy college. But, just one or two mistakes could make this period of time an unpleasant one. When you keep the information here in mind, you shouldn't have any problems.
