Served on the founding board of Linux International, the advisory board of the National White Collar Crime Center, and as an advisor and mentor to a number of companies, including Causes, Mozilla, Alynd,, ,Merchant Atlas, and others.  B.S. in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins. Lived and worked in Kobe, Japan for Mitsubishi Electric, and speaks Japanese in a rusty kansai-ben.

Led the development of a number of Lyft's strategic projects, including Transit, the first major new feature in Lyft since its rollout of shared rides. I led the user research, concept, R&D, and prototyping of the service which resulted in a platform for new ride types including trains, buses, ferries, scooters and bikes.

Interana makes behavioral analytics tools for curious people, providing real-time ad-hoc analytics on enormous data sets for companies like Tinder, Reddit, Asana, and Microsoft Bing. Interana was created with the goal of bringing the same cutting-edge analytics tools found at companies like Facebook to organizations of any size. As VP Engineering, I reduced release cycle time by 40% and increased QA coverage by 60%, resulting in tens of millions of dollars of new revenue, fewer bugs, and happier customers.

Handle is a productivity system that combines to-dos, email, and calendar so you know exactly what you need to accomplish today, tomorrow, and beyond. Hired as VP Engineering in December 2013, and promoted to VP Product and Engineering in December 2014. Responsible for defining the product set, testing assumptions with users, recruiting and leading a team of 15 product managers, designers, engineers, and testers. Helped the leadership team to fundamentally re-think their cost structure and technical architecture, recruited staff, invented and built a fully decentralized set of consumer internet products for iOS and the web that was featured by Apple's App Store for months, resulting in over 100,000 downloads. Was responsible for managing the capital cost structures so that as the user base grew, the company continued to scale, and continued to innovate at scale.

Founder and leader of the first blog search engine along with accompanying publisher tools including an advertising network. Starting as a science project in my basement running on two second-hand servers and my DSL line, built, funded, and grew Technorati to a 80+ person business with over $1M/month in revenue. Coded the initial implementation, and acted as product lead during the early years of Technorati's growth. Brought on a crack executive leadership team and hired world-class engineers and marketers, and enabled the company to compete and succeed against the titans in the technology sector. Built an enduring brand that is still strongly associated today with innovation and the best in social media. Recruited  CEO in 2007, and as board member, helped set Technorati's vision, mission, and business goals, and provided support, advice, and action to help Technorati's continued success in the marketplace. Worked with the board and leadership team to complete the company's sale to Synacor in 2016.

Highway1, Engajer, Xola, StartX, Mozilla, Causes

Mentor at Highway1, a venture fund/incubator that funds and incubates hardware-focused companies. Advisor for Engajer, an easy to use online platform that allows you to create and distribute interactive video content while measuring the audience’s engagement levels. Advisor and Mentor for Xola, which provides booking and marketing software to businesses offering tours and activities. Helped Mozilla Messaging build out sustainable revenue models and worked with the executive team at Mozilla to evaluate the business and then advised the board on the reintegration of Mozilla Messaging back into Mozilla Corporation. Advised Causes on key engineering management decisions, and worked closely with the engineering team as temporary VP of Engineering during a key growth phase.

Founder, CEO, and Chief Bottlecap Washer. Envisioned and prototyped the product, a totally customizable set of personalized travel guides, available for over 20,000 worldwide destinations, in both printed and electronic form. Recruited and built the team, and raised funding from angels and Venture Capitalists. Sold the company in 2012 to Look, Buy Fly Travel.

Won Linux Journal's 2003 Editor's Choice Server Appliance.

Linuxcare provided an array of technical information and support services to enhance and simplify the use of Linux and other Open Source software, including a news and information portal, Linuxcare University, Technical Support, and Product Certification for Dell, IBM, Compaq, Oracle, Sun, and other Linux providers across all major distributions. Responsible for the vision, technical architecture, and engineering implementation of Linuxcare's core businesses, providing Linux Technical Support, Professional Services, Training, and Product Certification to companies like Dell Computer, Sun Microsystems, Motorola, Oracle, Compaq, Hewlett Packard, NEC, and others. As founding CTO, helped the company define and build its core lines of business, close major deals and partnerships, and grow from the founding team of 3 people to over 480 people in a period of 18 months.


Software Engineer

Mitsubishi Electric, Inc.

Designed and built GUI tools to help factory managers in control rooms at steel mills, nuclear power plants, and hydroelectric power stations get the most up-to-date, real-time information on the current status of their factories. As the first non-Japanese in 17 years to work in the Kobe factory of 4,800 people, provided cultural exchange with Japanese engineers and managers, and mentored new recruits.
