As the medical director, founder, and chief surgeon at OptiVue Vision, Dr. William Martin stays active within the professional community and is a member of several organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Recently, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the largest membership association for eye care professionals, published the results of a new study on cataracts in its journal, Ophthalmology. The study looked at more than 14,500 male doctors in America over the age of 50 from 1997 to 2011, conducting a randomized and double-blind procedure. Half of the participants took daily multivitamin supplements, while the other half took placebos. Researchers kept track of how many participants in each group developed new cases of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. The study found that the placebo group experienced 945 cases of cataract development, while the multivitamin group had only 872 new cases, which translates to a 9 percent decrease in risk. Further, the risk for nuclear cataract development among the multivitamin group decreased by 13 percent, suggesting multivitamins play a role in lowering the risk of cataract development in men.
