About Dr Sonya Whitaker

A graduate of Northern Illinois University, Dr. Sonya Whitaker works as an author, national speaker, and school administrator based in Lockport, Illinois. As superintendent of the Fairmont School District, she has overseen a period of sustained improvement in student math and reading scores. Additionally, Dr. Sonya Whitaker generated plans to improve the district’s fiscal concerns, which led to an uptick in the district’s Illinois State Board of Education financial rating.

Prior to accepting her current position, Dr. Sonya Whitaker served as director for academic improvement for Schaumburg School District in Schaumburg, Illinois. During this time, she effectively coordinated with 27 school principals to improve student performance.

In addition to her work as an administrator, Dr. Sonya Whitaker speaks across the United States on topics related to improvements in schools and school administration. Recently, she delivered the keynote address for Norfolk Public Schools and the Virginia Board of Education at the Virginia School Board Association’s 2013 Tidewater Regional Forum. Furthermore, she was selected as a moderator for Columbia College’s National Beyond Bullying Safe Schools Summit in New York.
