The Title III HBGI PhD Fellowship is a prestigious award offered to qualified Ph.D. students enrolled in STEM disciplines at North Carolina A&T State University. The purpose of the Fellowship is to increase the number of native Black Americans earning a Ph.D. degree in STEM disciplines through a program of financial assistance. The Fellowship, consisting of a stipend and supplemental benefits, is funded through a Title III HBGI grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Software, Data, and Library Carpentry (The Carpentries) are programs of The Carpentries (a fiscally sponsored project of Community Initiatives). The Carpentries Instructors are volunteers who teach foundational computational and data skills to researchers, e.g., programming basics in R and Python, use of the command line, and version control. Housed on GitHub, all Carpentries’ lessons are open source, with an open contribution model, and lessons are collaboratively created and maintained by volunteers. Lessons are taught by Instructors in two-day workshops.

Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL) is AAC&U’s center of STEM higher education reform dedicated to empowering STEM faculty, including those from underrepresented groups, to graduate more students in STEM fields who are competitively trained and liberally educated.
Mentor: Tonya Smith-Jackson, Ph.D.
Responsibilities: Attend workshops, complete various teaching, writing, and shadowing faculty requirements, and create a portfolio of experiences demonstrating preparation for a career as a faculty member.
An advocate, advising students in their projects and working to move obstacles that stand in the way of their progress. As a result, faculty Champions are often the chief beneficiaries of the students’ impact as they work together to foster a culture of creativity and innovation.

Reinvented STEAM Dreamers brings real women STEAM role models into homes, classrooms, and nonprofit programs. Our goal is to make it easy for professionals to share their skills and expertise bringing real-world, authentic information to students to create the next generation of innovators.
During our presentation, we will introduce everyone to the opportunities that become available to students who choose to study engineering. We will briefly discuss the wide variety of engineering disciplines that exist, as well as the various types of careers that engineers can have. The three of us will review our own backgrounds briefly and then leave the floor open to answer any questions that students may have about engineering.
I am an Assistant Professor of Information Systems at North Carolina Central University. My background includes Computer Science, Information Science, and broadening participation in Computing. In my current role, I teach information science, research (using machine learning and natural language processing), and complete service at the university. During this session, I’ll give students a brief overview of myself and my work, and then open it up to their questions.
