A key figure in the practice of urology in central South Dakota, Dr. Joseph Wyatt first brought the specialty to the area in 2008, allowing local patients to be treated close to home. Dr. Wyatt conducts a private practice through Avera Medical Group, while also performing all urologic operations at nearby St. Mary's Healthcare Center. Dr. Wyatt received his Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University School of Medicine, receiving a citation letter for compassionate care during his studies. He completed an internship at Indiana University Preliminary Surgery and a urological residency at The University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he received a Resident Achievement Award in laparoscopy. Dr. Wyatt remains committed to the advancement of knowledge in the field of urology. He regularly reviews peer-written articles submitted for journal publication, and introduced the Laser TURP technology at St. Mary's Healthcare Center, becoming the first physician at the Center to perform a procedure utilizing the instrument. A member of the Air National Guard since 2000, Dr. Joseph Wyatt serves as a flight surgeon one weekend per month and two weeks per year, providing primary, preventative and emergent care to flight personnel and their dependents. In addition to his regular duties, he participated as a first responder to Hurricane Katrina and served overseas following the events of September 11, 2001. Dr. Wyatt has received several honors for his service, including the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal. To date, Dr. Wyatt has achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and currently serves with the 114th Fighter Wing. A community-minded individual, Dr. Wyatt maintains involvement with the James Valley Christian School. In his free time, he enjoys such active pursuits as outdoor sports.
