Artist's Statement

Artist's Statement

Through my travels I have come to realize that "a garden is where you find it". Any small, planted space may present itself as a garden whether natural or guided by the hand of the gardener. I believe both man and nature are wonderful gardeners. Whether I am photographing cultivated plants in a very controlled traditional garden setting, mountain wildflowers at high altitudes or a single plant beautifying the urban landscape, I approach all these situations in the same way - I am composing a tiny piece of the world in an honest attempt to extract from the minute the seeds of the universal.

I began creating photographs as the Denver Botanic Garden's official photographer in the spring of 2000. But looking back through my personal history as a photographer I realize that my relationship at DBG is really a culmination of ideas and ideals about photography that have been building through my entire career. Even as a newspaper photojournalist I realized that when I create an image it is truly an idealization of the world I am attempting to represent. Through careful selection and by utilizing the creative controls of photography, I very consciously choose what to include and more importantly, what to exclude from my images. I am working diligently to isolate a discreet moment of time and instill my personal notion of cultural importance embedded in that moment. I witness the wonder of the natural world, both cultivated and wild and I work to create compelling images that carry forth the deep emotional reactions I have experienced in the field.

I see myself a craftsman in the great early 20th Century tradition. I find inspiration in the work of photographers Charles Sheeler and Edward Weston as well as the prints of Japanese master Hokusai. The way in which the images are produced, my working methods, are very important to me personally. I am a workman using my technical and aesthetic skills, passions and knowledge to create images that touch my viewers and inspire them to venture out to create their own experiences.

Photography is my ticket to the world and it is very much the context within which I experience life. I view the world from a photographic perspective and I have spent my entire career looking at light, shadow and the juxtaposition of one element against another. I strive to create compelling images and when I do I feel it is a privilege to create a lasting impression of what I have seen.
