Doreen Boxer co-founded her own boutique law firm in 2011 after more than a decade and a half of litigation experience as a public defender in various California jurisdictions. Boxer McLaughlin, a professional corporation located in Newport Beach, provides criminal defense services to clients who face government prosecution in state and federal courts in southern California. Licensed to practice law in New York as well as California, Doreen Boxer enjoys a reputation as a tough litigator. A deputy district attorney who argued a freeway shooting case against her called Ms. Boxer a “formidable opponent in the courtroom.”From 2006 to 2010, Doreen Boxer served as Public Defender for the County of San Bernardino, the largest county in physical size within the 48 contiguous states. She directed a staff of 250 in 17 offices, with an annual budget of $31 million and a caseload of 60,000 civil and criminal matters. Ms. Boxer agreed to head a troubled organization: The year before her appointment, the Superior Court of California had removed the Public Defender’s office from 56 cases due to attorney incompetence. To improve the agency's performance, she established its first-ever training programs for attorneys and investigators. By the final year of her tenure, the team managed by Doreen Boxer achieved a record of only three case removals, all of which involved a single lawyer appointed before her term of office. Ms. Boxer received the Program of the Year Award from the California Public Defenders Association in 2010 for the Alternative Approaches to Rehabilitation Within the Community program she designed.Doreen Boxer’s previous professional work includes a decade as a Deputy Associate Defender for the Orange County Public Defender’s Office and a year as a Deputy Public Defender for the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office. In Los Angeles County, she specialized in defense of indigent clients accused of misdemeanor offenses; in Orange County, she most notably assisted those charged with homicides under special circumstances. Doreen Boxer received her undergraduate training in International Business and Marketing at New York University, and her law degree from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University.
