Since March 1997, Deric Rothe has been employed at the Auburn Journal, a daily newspaper serving the residents of Auburn, California. Rothe currently serves as the paper's Executive Editor and General Manager, in which capacity he is responsible for the Journal's print and online content, personnel decisions, and budget management. The Auburn Journal is part of the Gold Country Media chain of newspapers that includes the Colfax Record in the town of Colfax and The Roseville Press-Tribune in Roseville. During Rothe's tenure, the Auburn Journal has won dozens of awards for editorial writing, photography, sports coverage, and breaking news. Before coming to the Journal, he served as the Editor of the Elk Grove and Laguna Neighbors section of the Sacramento Bee. Rothe has a Bachelor of Arts in Information and Communication Studies from California State University, Chico.Outside of journalism, Rothe owns a whitewater rafting company, Sierra Whitewater, located in Auburn. Established in 2007, Sierra Whitewater offers trips for individuals and groups for one day or for the weekend. Deric Rothe is the company's Head Guide, and he leads exciting tours down California's scenic American River. Rothe is certified in swift water rescue training, first aid, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). He also writes a blog on Sierra Whitewater's website.Rothe is also an active member in his community and belongs to numerous organizations and charitable groups. He is the founder and Chairman of the Auburn Community Festival, and he belongs to the Auburn Rotary Club and California Newspaper Publishers Association. Deric Rothe also donates his time and resources to charities, such as the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, The Salvation Army, Protect American River Canyons, and The Gathering Inn homeless shelter.
