Dr. Dean Toriumi’s rigorous education prepared him for a successful career as a plastic surgeon in Chicago, specializing in rhinoplasty. He draws on this accumulated knowledge as he performs complex procedures in facial plastic and reconstrucrtive surgery such as brow lifts, eye lifts, face-lifts, and skin cancer reconstruction. Dr. Toriumi earned his BA in Biology and Chemistry at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. He moved on to Rush Medical College in Chicago, and then to a general surgery residency at Metropolitan General Hospitals. Dr. Dean Toriumi did his residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago; he then did fellowship trainings at both Tulane University Hospital and the University of Washington in Seattle.As he built his practice, Dr. Dean Toriumi joined the faculty of the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Toriumi has received many honors. Chicago Magazine named him a Best Doctor in 1997 and a Top Doctor in 2004. W Magazine chose Dr. Dean Toriumi as one of the top five rhinoplasty surgeons in the world. Dr. Toriumi also won peer recognition as one of the Best Doctors in America in 2007-2008 and again in 2009-2010, as well as several professional awards.Dr. Dean Toriumi has co-authored or edited four textbooks, including Open Structure Rhinoplasty and Rhinoplasty Dissection Manual. He has also co-written more than 100 journal articles and more than 50 book chapters, participated in or led numerous panel discussions, and presented papers at many conferences. He currently researches head and neck reconstructive surgery and long term follow-up in rhinoplasty surgery using three dimensional computer imaging.Dr. Toriumi has a philosophy of individual care for each patient. He recognizes that facial procedures such as rhinoplasty must be tailored to the individual and may take several operations to complete. Dr. Dean Toriumi also takes into account patients’ desire to appear natural while appearing younger. He takes a conservative approach to avoid problems that may lead to an unnatural appearance.

Some doctors attempt to remedy this misconception by performing more surgeries while the nose is still fragile, leading to complications down the road.Interviewer: How long does the healing process take after rhinoplasty?Dr. Toriumi: The healing process continues for the rest of the patient’s life. It is imperative that patients continue to follow up with their surgeons for years after their surgery.
