Sustainable Development Policy and Governance


Two-year secondment to the EDF Group Sustainable Development Division in Paris

Responsible for…

EDF’s Group-wide internal sustainability governance system: collaborating with 30 senior executives from 12 countries and coordinating a series of working groups.

Management of strategic international projects: United Nations’ Year of Access to Sustainable Energy For All, Rio+20 summit, FTSE4Good and ScenaRio2012.

The deployment of Group sustainability strategy in key subsidiaries EDF Energy and Edison.

Key achievements

·Co-ordinated EDF’s entry into the FTSE4Good index.

·Ensured sustainability was effectively embedded into EDF’s London 2012 sponsorship.

·Co-piloted EDF’s effective participation in the Rio+20 summit.

In charge of drafting a new set of sustainability commitments (temporary assignment following return from secondment)

Responsible for…

Working closely with a wide range of stakeholders across EDF Energy and EDF Group to draft a new set of sustainability commitments. These will encapsulate EDF Energy’s 2030 vision to be a sustainable energy company. Digital innovations will feature strongly.

Representative of the French state on a task force monitoring and influencing the development of regulation around the use of biomass for energy generation.

Head of Corporate Responsibility Strategy

EDF Energy

Overall leadership of the design, communication and roll out of EDF Energy’s sustainability strategy, working in a matrix structure to deliver change.

Responsible for…

Collaboration with Business Units to develop action plans in line with business objectives, assure delivery, engage employees and communicate performance. Responsible for the internal sustainability governance system and sustainability reporting.

Developing the skills and behaviours of employees to create a culture of sustainability.

Monitoring emerging sustainability innovations and integrating them into the business.

The design, implementation and monitoring of the community investment strategy, including charity partnerships and safe employee volunteering activities.

Promoting EDF Energy’s reputation externally: speaking at conferences and managing stakeholder relationships.

A team of five and a budget of £700k.

Key achievements

·Developed industry-leading sustainability strategy and commitments. EDF Energy is perceived by the public to be the most sustainable energy company.

·Improved EDF Energy’s score in the BITC CR Index from 75% to 99% in four years gaining Platinum Plus status and becoming sector leader.

·Achieved a double-digit reduction in carbon emissions and waste.

·Fostered a highly collaborative way of working across business functions.

·Built and animated a network of sustainability Ambassadors across the company. Developed an e-community for EDF Energy’s Ambassadors and community volunteers.

·Signed charity partnerships with Global Action Plan and MS Society.

·Member of Steering Committee for BITC Visioning the Future Project.

Corporate Responsibility reporting

Sole or contributing author of CR reports for: Pearson; Scottish & Newcastle; HBOS; MFI; and Chime Communications.

Strategy development

Lead the development of a simple, practical CR strategy for the retailer MFI. This was based on the results of stakeholder dialogue and interviews with senior executives.
