Over the years I’ve learned how to step into something in which I have little to no experience, only to find my self grow to enjoy, appreciate, and lead in that very thing. When I am not working and as much as I can... I love to hike, travel, run, and sing (mainly in my car); I love to play, serve, and cook for friends; and, every once in a while, you will find me relaxing with a book.
In this volunteer position, I help a local non-profit ministry to make software and technical decisions. I also help to maintain their current WordPress site at "www.feedingtheorphans.org" as well as to implement and design their store front at "store.feedingtheorphans.org".
Starting as the only quality assurance professional in a software company with 20 employees and 8 developers my responsibilities quickly grew to include, helping with the management and prioritization of development cycles, diagnosing software bugs, as well as managing a QA team of two with an occasional intern. I learned technical skills both on the job and outside the job which included, querying both sql and non-sql databases, writing powershell scripts to automate build and deployment tasks, and writing selenium tests in C# to automate testing. As a key point of contact between our client support team and our development team, I was required to have an understanding of both the development process and the complex challenges of serving our clients needs. The healthy and constant tension between client needs and efficient development has helped me to grow significantly in regards to patience, problem solving, and overall people skills.
Our primary goal was to help develop a sustainable farm at an orphanage/school in the small village of Nakateete. Our secondary goals included education in which I taught primary six and primary seven classes in the subjects of math and science. We also served in a locally driven initiative to provide HIV education and testing on the remote Islands in lake Victoria.
I was involved in a variety of remodeling projects and was often left to my self to finish or manage a site. As a result I gained valuable experience in managing my own time and resources on a project.
As a member of the California National Disasters Team at Langley, I researched and implemented NASA satellite data to determine fuel characteristics for understanding wildfires. I gained valuable experience with mapping software and interpreting data, as well as extensive experience in professional communication, team work, and presentation. As a part of the develop team at Wise my responsibilities included utilizing geographical information systems and various sources of data for local research and application.
