A native of the Los Angeles area, Dan Melnick was born in Santa Monica and raised in nearby San Fernando Valley. When it came time to choose a college, he decided to stay close to home and attend the University of California, Los Angeles, graduating with his Bachelor of Arts in History in 1975. Mr. Melnick’s choice of law school settled on his hometown college, the San Fernando Valley College of Law.
After receiving his Juris Doctorate and passing the bar exam, Dan Melnick left California to accept a position with a labor law consulting firm in Chicago, Illinois. His departure from the Golden State was brief, however; Mr. Melnick returned to Southern California in 1983 and continued practicing law there.
Upon returning to California, Dan Melnick initially continued working in labor law but quickly discovered his true calling as a criminal defense attorney. He cites his passion for connecting with clients on a personal level as largely shaping his decision to pursue criminal defense. Also important was the criminal defense attorney’s role of “standing up for the little guy,” as opposed to representing a large corporate entity.
Dan Melnick currently lives in Encino, California. In his spare time he enjoys skiing, sailing, and playing competitive hockey.
