Established corporate communications department for state’s incumbent local phone company ($550 million, 1.9K employees), taken private from Verizon in 2005.Defined communications policies and procedures.Chief spokesperson and communications strategist.  Member of Senior Team. Supervised PR agency and hired in-house team. Supported investor relations, regulatory relations and marketing communications.

  • Externally, aggressively promoted company's deployments of advanced technology in media and retiree road shows, CEO keynotes, news releases and community presentations.  Efforts replaced public skepticism of buyout with enthusiasm and built significant goodwill in advance of company’s $100 million IT transformation project 
  • Internally, filled an information vacuum by deploying weekly newsletter, executive roundtables, employee road shows and periodic bulletins for key managers. Also hosted monthly meetings for directors and above, and created tiered e-mail lists to establish vital channels of communication ahead of comprehensive IT transition
  • Championed employee focus groups to identify and address obstacles to success.Used results to alert senior team to challenges, develop new communications channels, and deploy strategy to enhance ties between rank-and-file managers and IT vendor

Developed C-level speeches and investor presentations for America’s Most Admired Semiconductor Company, (third-largest in world and largest in wireless communications; $11 billion, 35K employees, multinational).  Wrote quarterly earnings and annual reports.  Extensive communications support for executives and colleagues in India, Mexico, China, Japan and other locations.

  • Worked across diverse business units to structure unified corporate messaging.  Counseled colleagues on positioning company as world leader in signal processing.  Efforts helped colleagues secure significant press coverage with US and international media
  • Assisted executives with sensitive employee communications issues and merger activity
  • Helped company fend off Intel’s assault into cellular with strategic messaging and executive presentations at key industry shows including 3GSM World Congress and CDMA Americas

Received five promotions in nine years with GTE.  

Served in corporate headquarters from April 1998 to December 1999.  Wrote speeches for chairman/CEO and his direct reports at largest independent US local phone company ($20 billion, over 100K employees, multinational).Supervised three-person team that supported unit presidents and managed events.

  • Collaborated with AVP-Internal Communications to reorient culture across diverse business units to reflect newly competitive industry, ensuring employee understanding of new environment and support for business decisions.  Produced “GTE Business Direction” video that won Bronze Telly Award
  • Increased effectiveness while reducing expenses by re-establishing the executive communications function and team, a politically delicate maneuver to bring CEO support back in-house
