As in any small business, I am required to wear many hats and step out of the proverbial comfort zone on a regular basis.  One of my favorite hats to wear though is that of consulting with businesses in various industries on methods to improve inventory management, document management or business practices by utilizing their existing infrastructure or for minimal cash outlay.

Purchasing, Inventory Control and Information Technologies Manager

HVAC Sales and Supply Co., Inc.

Memphis, TN

  • Managed the purchasing, replenishment, and movement of over $5,000,000 of inventory in six different locations using a hub and spoke methodology.
  • Acting sole contact for support of all company owned hardware and software including all business applications and server platforms.
  • Acting party in the management of developing and maintaining facility systems, applications, and security, telephone, and network configurations for all HVAC locations.
  • Managed development of e-commerce B2B website
  • Managed development, deployment, and maintenance of Wireless Warehouse Management System.
  • Oversaw the construction and/or maintenance activities performed by third parties.
  • Training of all employees on the operations of newly installed or modified applications, automation, and control system.
  • Significantly reduced business critical systems downtime.
  • Liaison for new system start up and commissioning by all outside system contractors.

During my time in this role at HVAC, using data extracted directly from the SQL database, I developed several tools to aid in my responsibilities such as monitoring back-ordered, special, or direct ship items; dynamic purchase review cycles based on variable/seasonal demand as opposed to min/max levels or other inventory purchasing methods based on static data; and data accuracy in relation to regional industry standards translated from manufacturer descriptions and UOM's.  In addition, since in my opinion your sell price, should in part, be based on your replacement cost and not just the purchase price, I developed methods to allow for simple sell price updates based on those two factors.  One thing I learned quickly after my promotion to the role is that, in order to manage thousands of items on an item-by-item basis is a time consuming process that could be benefit from flexible algorithms that reflect key metrics such as inventory value, turns, supplier lead-time, profit margin, supplier freight paid order value's, and so on.
