Summary

As a national academic leader in medical education, bringing research-based insights to medical education is a true passion of mine, one that has been strengthened through a range of academic and editorial appointments. As a national leader for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, I’ve played an integral role in furthering efforts and educating fellow physicians on the latest in ophthalmology, as Senior Editor for the Ophthalmic News Education Network (ONE). As a medical expert and ophthalmology scholar for Healthtap.com, I’ve played a key role in transforming the way we treat and support the needs of the ill using telemedicine and crowdsourcing. I currently serve as ophthalmology board review faculty at The Osler Institute where I teach many sections including optics, pediatrics, neuro-ophthalmology anterior, and posterior segment. My passion is teaching, and being faculty at both the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, and the University of Virginia School of Medicine is rewarding and an honor.

I grew up in Houston, graduated from the Dr. Michael Debakey High School for Health Professions in the Texas Medical Center, and served in the United States Army Reserves. During the Gulf War, I was deployed to South Korea. While still in the US Army Reserves, I graduated with honors from The University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. Then I completed an internship in general surgery in Dallas and an ophthalmology residency in Los Angeles. My clinical and research interests in diabetic retinopathy and merging technology with medicine have resulted in several publications. I am a reviewer for several journals including the Journal of Ophthalmology, and Diabetes Care. I specialize in eye surgery to improve vision and prevent blindness in our military veterans. I am currently the ophthalmology residency director for the Veterans Affairs in Salem, Virginia.
