2001 - Present

Middle School Head

The International School of Brussels
  • Provided clear, consistent leadership for the Middle School community by focusing all decisions on student learning in the context of ISB's Mission Statement.
  • Built a positive, learning culture in the Middle School to support a wide range of adolescent learners
  • Developed a strong leadership team of Heads of Department, equipped to lead their departments in implementing the Common Ground Curriculum.
  • Created a new Advisory Program with the purpose of producing Independent Learners and International Citizens with a philosophy developed by the faculty that we use to this day: "We believe that everyone counts."
  • Re-designed physical spaces to reflect learning philosophy of curriculum in tandem with strategic recruitment of new leadership and team members in English & Mathematics, re-designing approaches to learning in both areas with a major focus on inquiry, collaboration, and differentiation.
  • Maintained and developed programs that  provide students with meaningful choices in their own learning including a strong Bilingual Program and elective courses that  provide students with opportunities to explore and find their personal passions in areas such as the Performing & Visual Arts,, electronics, robotics, digital media, design, journalism, video editing, and digital photography.
  • Transformed the English Language Development Program to better support the learning needs of our shifting demographic of students.
  • Oversaw the development of the Middle School Special Education Class to give access to the Middle School for all types of learners.
  • Recruited, supported, developed an outstanding community of Middle Level Educators who create the learning culture of the Middle School in every classroom on a daily basis.
  • Implemented a comprehensive professional development plan for Middle School faculty including departmental goals, faculty-lead sharing sessions,  biannual faculty retreats to support teachers in their work to continuously improve their practice.
2004 - Present

Assistant Director

  • Act as sounding board for Director on major initatives and strategic issues

  • Co‐designed new appraisal system based on collegial professional conversations, and building a supporttve learning environment for faculty

  • Collaborated with Communications and Technology Departments on the adoption of the Parent Portal to improve communication with community

  • Co‐led alignment of Middle and High School assessment system with the Common Ground Curriculum, making explicit ISB's beliefs about learning and embedding the teaching and learning standards in an assessment system that makes the curriculum explicit to students, teachers and parents

  • Collaborated as a member of the Project Team for Technology and Learning Projects Phase One, the 1:1 laptop iinitiative, and Phase 2, the Google Apps Implementation to fully utlize collaborative, creative and communication power of technology to improve student learning

  • Recruited faculty, including school‐wide admin and leadership roles

  • Participate in ISB Works Council meetings to discuss working conditions and remuneration in a collaborative context

  • Ensured continuity and effective operations of the school during the Director's illness
  • Worked with Board Committees on ongoing strategic school directions
  • Led process of budget approval with Finance Committee
  • Worked with Human Resources to place all employees on Hay scale in the context of the school's organizational structure
  • Developed new school policies on substance abuse and bullying

  • Shared the responsibility of leading the Middle School in all aspects.
  • Provided leadership and assistance to students.
  • Assisted in the interviewing and intake of new students.
  • Counseled with parents and students on matters of discipline and attendance.
  • Assisted in the preparation of the master schedule.
  • Provided general support to faculty.
  • Assumed responsibility for the supervision and evaluation of all first-year teachers.
  • Led an initial laptop project for faculty with online classrooms.
