Student Advisor

El Independiente

"El Independiente" serves as the only bi-lingual news publication for the city of South Tucson. Although there are no paid positions, I took my job for the news source very seriously on behalf of my staff and the community we served. 

  • Served as El Independiente's first Student Advisor in the publications 35-year history
  • Oversaw and managed a staff of 20 editors, reporters and photographers in the implementation and production of the largest student-run bi-lingual newspaper in the nation
  • Guided reporters in the development process of finding what makes a news story including research, background, the interview, official commentary and community reaction
  • Copy edited first, second and final draft of stories, headlines and captions before publication
  • Worked closely with advisor in the process of selecting material for print that met with the standards of the publication
  • Proof read stories for each issue on deadline prior to final production
  • Streamlined photography process by coordinationg reporters, photographers and editors and implementing an accountability system

  • Shot photos including a series that was used for the masthead of the online edition from 2008 until 2013
  • Updated antiquated distribution system to save time and money

  • Copy edited stories, proofread, wrote headlines and captions, assisted in distribution

Associate Producer "Good Morning Tucson"

Immediately after 9/11 our features class was given the assignment to switch from our semester-long projects to covering the nations top story from a local point of view. I chose to interview local broadcasters who had traveld to ground zero. As a result of those interviews, I was offered a position as an associate producer. This paid position served in lieu of an internship.

  • Wrote and edited broadcast-read copy, including stories from national , state and local reports, breaking news, and re-writes
  • Produced and edited packages which include writing, coordinating the story for on-air perssonality, reporter voiceovers, film and text for "Good Morning Tucson" as well as for multiple news breaks
  • Ran teleprompters, created and ran traffic maps for telecast
  • Assisted producer, production crew and on-air personnell before and during telecasts
  • Monitored phones, scanners, computers and other services for breaking news, tips and updates, and to field viewer calls

Volunteer Experience

Parent Advocate  Mental Health Services  Tucson, Ariz.  2001 – Present

  • Research  best practices, policies, laws to ensure client receives most appropriate services available for mentally ill individuals 
  • Assist families, client in obtaining mental health, and behavioral services
  • Attend child family team meetings, adult recovery team meetings, court proceedings, group and individual counseling sessions
  •  Develope crisis plans, behavioral plans and daily living plans
  • Provide emotional support for family members of client currently in crisis
  • Recently becoming familiar with best practices, life skills and strategies for autistic clients and their family members

Team Photographer Sahuaro High School Girls Volleyball  2014 -  Present

  • Photographed  each freshman, junior varsity, and varsity team player for headshot used for team rosters
  • Photographed each team at both home and away regular season games and tournaments 
  • Compiled, edited, photoshopped , and scripted multi-media presentation that includes stills, video, audio, and media clips from the season.

Fundraising Coordinator Cougar Girls Volleyball  2014 - Present

  • Established community relations for high school club team sports
  • Developed and implemented fundraising strategies
  • Secured funding for teams needs and special events

A bit about Me...

I love to play games - board games, cards, sherades - anything that makes me think and laugh at the same time is wonderful. I enjoy swimming, yoga, photography, writing and DIY projects - especially if I can upcycle goods.
