Personal Recreation Philosophy

Everyone has the right to leisure and recreation, and exercising this right will build character, loyalty, friendships, and values that forge relationships and will reverberate through society facilitating community and sport development.

Bachlor of Tourism Management

The degree program builds on existing diploma programs in Recreation, Tourism and Hospitality Management that stress career-entry skills. Students may apply to the third year of the degree program after completing a diploma in Recreation or Tourism, or Hospitality Management.

The degree program will provide applied skills and concepts related to the provision of leisure services management in the fields of recreation and tourism. The degree will focus on the development of management and entrepreneurial skills needed for people wishing to assume greater responsibilities within an organization, or for those wishing to start new enterprises.

Recreation and Sport Management Diploma

Vancouver Island University

The focus of this diploma program is on the provision of recreation and sport services and products in public, private, and not-for-profit sectors within communities. The program assesses the impact of recreation and sport and the environment in order to plan and develop healthy communities. Features of the program include the provision of applied skills and knowledge, direct leadership experience, a co-operative education model (paid employment), and small class sizes.

The program prepares students for career entry; however, students interested in further studies can apply to the third year of VIU’s Bachelor of Tourism Management, Major in Recreation.

Event Management Certificate

Develop skills for the exciting and growing industry of special events. Event management skills are needed in a wide range of sectors: tourism, recreation, arts and culture, sports, fundraising, corporate marketing, non-profit organizations, and more.

The program prepares graduates with the skills and knowledge needed to plan and manage festivals and events, with an emphasis on the tourism and recreation sector. It provides an opportunity to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to work in event management, as well as providing professional development and credentialing for those already working in this field

- Retrieve and unhook guest from the bungee cords.

- Operate and maintain boating equipment.

Jump Operator

- Assist in jumping guests off of a 140' bridge over the Nanaimo River.

- Operate and maintain bridge and bungee equipment.
