Responsibilities of the position were as follows;

  • Assisting and co-teaching the following courses;
    • Environmental Design/Build
    • Furniture Design/Build
    • Design Studio I and II
    • Wood Turning
    • Cold Climate Carpentry
    • Design with Climate
  • Managing the REED Shop and Studio
    • Maintenance and upkeep of all equipment and and tools within each space
    • Ensuring a safe and clean working environment
    • Overseeing the operation of the programs CNC machine
    • Ensuring that all students using the shop space have gone through a shop introduction and safety check

    • Document shop and studio expenditures for all projects

  • Wood Millling (Spring 2014 and 2015) -
    • 1 credit intensive covering sustainable forestry, safe and proper use of a chainsaw, procedures for correctly milling wood slabs using an Alaskan chainsaw mill.
  • Cold Weather Carpentry (Spring 2014) -
    • Co-taught this 1 credit intensive where we completed a 12 x 16 timber frame bike shelter on Green Mountain College campus.
  • Environmental Design/Build (Fall 2014) -
    • 4 credit lab course where students collaboratively design and build a 100 square foot writers cabin.
  • Community Carpentry (Spring 2015) -
    • 1 credit intensive focusing on small design/build projects to benefit the greater Green Mountain College community.

Responsibilities of the position were as follows;

  • Assist in the layout and cutting of all joinery needed to complete each project. Projects included;
    • 1300 sq. ft. two story douglas fir king post frame
    • 180 sq. ft. Alaskan yellow cedar and Sitka spruce hammer beam frame
    • Alaskan yellow cedar town marker sign
  • Tasks included;
    • Timber Dimensioning (power planer, thickness planer)
    • Cutting of joints (hand saws, power saws, chainsaw mortiser, hand chisels, chainsaws)
    • Raising of frame on site (site management, pegging bents, rigging for crane)

Responsibilities of the position were as follows;

  • Accomplish and manage all activities to successfully build 900 lineal feet of board walk and porches at Wynn Nature Center
    • Site layout

    • Layout and setting of joists and board walk decking
    • Disassemble two existing porches, modify layout and re-construct
  • Ensure that other members on the crew were on task and that shipments were delivered and moved correctly

    • Two high tunnel green houses (using solar thermal technology)
    • The completion of a 100 sq. ft. tiny house
    • Jigs and storage solutions in the REED Shop
  • Assist other students by holding shop hours
  • Assist in the Furniture Design/Build class
  • Keeping a log of the operational output of renewable energy sources on campus
  • Upkeep and maintenance of the REED Shop

Green Mountain College

Green Mountain College is a small Environmental Liberal Arts college in Poultney, Vermont.  I attended this college for three years an in this time fulfilled the requirements to gain a bachelors degree in the above mentioned area of study. 

The classes that pertain to this job are as follows;

  • Nature of Design - sustainable design class
  • Ecological Design - class focusing on ecological design practices and Google SketchUp
  • Environmental Design/Build - designed and built shop stools from recycled materials and a tiny house using locally sourced and recycled materials.
  • Energy and Society - a class focused on the use of energy and various renewable energy sources
  • Renewable Energy Technology and Application

While being a student at Green Mountain College, I was also awarded the opportunity of doing an independent study as the Furniture Design/Build Apprentice where I was responsible for helping the professor teach and manage the shop class environment.
