While a high school student, Christopher Spiegel served as an intern for two summers at the Mystic Aquarium. In 1973, Kelvin Smith founded the Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut. A practicing chemist, Smith had worked in the 1950s and 1960s with another chemist, William Kelley, to develop a product that would reliably create seawater for the laboratory environment. In 1964, Kelley founded Aquarium Systems, Inc., to manufacture the product, which quickly gained broad acceptance across the scientific community. The Mystic Aquarium, as Smith’s facility quickly became known, was one of the first major aquariums to prepare its saltwater exhibits with Instant Ocean, which remains a leader in its field. The Mystic Aquarium has developed over the years into one of the nation’s premier oceanography institutes and public aquariums. It features several exhibits that permit audience members to interact with various creatures, like rays and sharks. Dr. Robert Ballard, the famed explorer and oceanographer who discovered the wreck of the Titanic, joined the Mystic Aquarium in 1997 and founded its Ocean Exploration Center, which is the base of operations for his many projects.
